Picture of the Week August 29, 2006

This week's POTW I've given to Dan (bonou2) who has posted some very unique and individual persepectives on something we see quite frequently here: sunsets. I found the image that I've chosen had a real arty feel to it and because it's something that's out of the ordinary in its identity, it appealed to me.

I missed this post when it was first submitted and I also liked the shot above it, of the sun next to the buildings. The original thread can be found here.

Congrats Dan, I for one would be very keen to know how you executed this shot, and what type of filter and post processing you used.

If I was nit picking Dan, I'd say that this may have been over sharpened just a tad, this is evident in the halo around the nail head, but it's a minor issue in what I find a very unique interpretation of a sunset shot - I like it a lot!

Put your hands together ladies and gentlemen, this week for Dan!!

For those that have noticed, yes Dan has been chosen two consequtive weeks. I guess he's just having a good couple of weeks. Whilst this is rare, it can happen. Any problems with that and we'll refund your memership fee

At the risk of looking like a complete dimwit, I have to say that I have a hard time finding anything that I like in this image. Mind you, I'm no artist, just an ordinary guy, but for me this is a case of "emperor's new clothes", and I just have to say "he's naked"...

Dan, I hope you don't mind me not liking your picture, and you have my congrats on PoW anyhow.

Dan PS: Taken with a 50mm 1.4 Nikon lens. 1.4 Ap from memory. No Post Processing, nothing, sharpening either. Not sure if that effect around the sun is because of compression, but it is the only thing it could be! My idea was, just as Geoff said, to make something we see everyday, different. and i had a love affair at the time with Bokeh (now divorced).

Steffen- an honest approach is always good. As I said a little earlier, some will love this image, some will hate it. It's what makes us humans the incredible beings that we are- uniquely individualistic!

The fact that I chose Dan for the 2nd time in two weeks was indeed an error on my part, but after carefully going through the last 10 days or so of all the image posts (took around an hour or a bit more) it struck a chord with me, and it appealed to my arty side .

As for a trifecta - nice in theory but highly unlikely- especially as I'm not choosing next week

No, nobody will accuse you anything like that. I think one of the strengths of PotW is that the mods have a totally free choice in their selection, and the only criteria that is set is that the image works for them.

If it doesn't happen to work for you, that is great, because that is one of the beautiful things about life: we are all different, and we all respond to different stimuli.

Part of the concept is to promote not just the image, but discussion about the image. I think this is a very interesting image, and it's rather well executed. That doesn't mean that I like it, and I do think it's been oversharpened.

But it does make me think about the processes involved in making the image.

Is that a bad thing?

Can i please repeat, i did not sharpen the image. I dont sharpen any of my images ever (btw should i?). That halo effect has happened in the compression and conversion from TIFF to JPEG (72dpi).

Backlighting can create a halo effect. Maybe that's what it is. I guess downsampling the image may exagerate it depending upon what software algorithm is used.

Should you sharpen images? I usually do. But its often overdone and a "halo" is an obvious clue. I suspect the halo in your photo is caused by backlighting however.

Congratulations for a very unique image. I guess it is what some called painting with light. Very creative! And yet, each of the other images posted is very good.
