Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Picture Of The Week - March 6, 2007

Postby MHD on Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:11 am

Wow... Yes the cliched first word in a POTW thread... Wow...

Let me give you an insight into the process of picking this weeks winner... I had been pretty busy so I took the time out last night to sort through the images posted throughout the week... I decided open the images section and just keep opening new tabs for each post... My poor computer nearly died...

I managed to sort the huge number of images down to 10 images that on a slow week would have easily picked up POTW... 10 images!!!!

There were some standout images in this group:
I am amazed at Ghetto Panda's first image post
http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24609
I like the tones and textures of Trotkiller's Leura Cascades
http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24723
As is normal Flipfrog produced great images in his Vancouver series, I love the image of the tobacco
http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24667
Leigh comes out with some wierd stuff and some times stuff I really like, for example this image from his DJ sequence
http://dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24699

But in the end I had to choose one...
So congratulations Owen for you image lightning at the pier!
Image
This image stood out for so many reasons. This image not only included the elusive and hard to catch ligtning bolt but was also very well composed with great leading lines and artistic PP

Green with envy mate! Well done!

Thanks :)

I want to point out so as not to deceive anyone, that the lightning was added from another shot. I felt the pier image was too plain and needed something extra which the lightning provided.

As MHD mentioned there are a lot of great images this week - I don't envy the guys who have to choose the POTW!

Thanks again,
Owen.

Thanks mate.

I've updated the original thread with a rough idea of how i merged it all together. the main thing was matching the grey tones, and then increasing the contrast to bring out the lightning and darken the clouds.

Cheers.

Very dramatic, Owen. Well done. Maybe the glow around the hand rail was caused by a tickle from the lightning. :D

Great shot Owen,

well deserved pick. To have the vision to do it and the knowledge to actually execute it is great,

Great work combining the two shots so effectively. The original pier was a bit bland, the lightning was well caught but the context was uninspiring, but put them together and go the BW and other PP tweaks, and you have yourself a fantastic PotW. Outstanding.

This is a fine example of where PP has added to a shot and turned it from a so so shot into something awesome - well done and congratulations..
