POTW 6 Sep 11

I don't get the time to comment on posts as much as I used to and frankly I've even had less time for photography of late, but I'm still regularly checking on the posts here and looking at the quality work being shared. The image I've chosen for picture of the week is one of the reasons I keep coming back. This one that jumped out at me when I first saw it a few days ago and for once I can't articulate properly why I like the image. Fortunately Matt. K's comments in the original post are a damn fine summation

Congratulations Wayne for breaking all the "rules" and pulling this off in style.

This image has a wide space between 2 different subjects, normally a composition killer....but in this case it works. Shows that rules can be broken. I have tried to decipher the composition but in this very rare case....nothing seems to add up. I look at the guy with the phone and then I glance at the 2 schoolgirls....there seems to be no connection between them or any visual link. The diagonals of the pavement are 1 binding element but not enough by themselves to hold the image together. What is crucial to this image are the specular highlights, (the white blobs), but I can't quite articulate why.

I agree with the comments so far. This image pulls you in - you look for something that you don't quite find, but in looking for a central theme you find lots of incidental themes.
