POTW 25 Mar 08

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. POTW 25 Mar 08

Postby stubbsy on Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:30 pm

This week my choice for Picture of the Week is an image that shows us where digital imaging is taking us. As you'd all be aware Nikon recently released their D300 and D3 cameras which show a large leap in their ability to handle low light using high ISO without significant digital noise. I have no doubt that Canon and other manufacturers will be releasing models with similar features in the near future. The image below was taken with a D3 at 3200 ISO using the candles on the birthday cake as their principal light source. Not only is the high ISO handled wonderfully, but the result is an image that has a lovely soft glow to it. For some reason this reminds me of the Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon where candle light was used to light many of the shots in the movie using a custom modified Zeiss 50mm f 0.7 lens.

Congratulations Justin on this fine image (the original post is HERE)

I have seen something similar with a D3 using the light from a mobile phone screen to illuminate a person's face.

All I can say is that i want one!
