Picture of the Week 6 September 2005I must disclose a personal interest this week. I really love elephants. Rosanne and I have travelled around Thailand
a couple of times, and we were captivated by these gracious beasts. This week's PotW is from a Canon user (!!), DionM. I like this shot a great deal. The differential focus between elephants one and two, the beautiful rendering of the texture of the elphant's skin, the tight crop - all add up to a very pleasing portrait. I am not entirely sure whether I feel sad for them, as the thread is titled - I would hope that their lives are fulfilling and happy. Maybe that's just to make me feel better. Great shot Dion, excellent PotW. The thread is here Greg - - - - D200 etc

Thanx for reposting this message, Greg. It's a shame that such a wonderful image needed to be reposted as PotW because of the antics of a dickhead turkey coward.
Dion, Congrats again for a wonderful image, well composed, and with sharpness to die for. g.

I agree, and love the sharpness too! Well done Dion!!
So, do we know what Canon camera and lens were used? GREG: Have you ever heard of the Vengeful Elephant! Last edited by waspo on Sat Sep 10, 2005 6:26 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Congrats Dion. Is there an echo around here or is it just deja vu. You really hit the bigtime with this shot. First POTW from a Canon user and (thanks to those dreaded Turkish hackers) the first POTW to go for a fortnight. VERY different from the Anzac Square pic we won't mention (and which I never saw!) As I said when this was first put up as POTW I love the detail in this and the diagonal of that ultra sharp trunk running across the silky smooth background.

It is an excellent image Dion. I believe you have done something difficult to do in photography, that it to capture emotion in an animal.
Well done with an image worthy of the photo of the week. Steve.

As I said in the earlier thread, well done, great shot.
I have a feeling this POTW is going to be like Star Trek and Gilligans Island, et al, even more popular in re-runs If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
Thanks guys.
Waspo - it was shot with my 20D and 70-200 F2.8L. Quite an eventful entry into this place - my first photo ends up in a 12 page debate and a locked thread, and this one ends up as a two week POTW. It was an image I really wanted to capture soon as I saw them. To the right of the image was about 100 people lined up to feed them, so it was a challenge to keep them out (no post-editing crops on this image) and also capture what I wanted. Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
Please be assured that a 12 page debate is unusual in this place... and that was an extreme case... Ignore that experience and keep contributing... Cheers, John

Speaking of which, somebody probably needs to mention the passing this week of Bob Denver. I always preferred him a Maynard G. Crebbs ... g.
