WA and fast lens, no flash to capture the right moment of the dawn service. Birddog114

Scott - I think this is a great chance to get some nice images, as long as you're not invasive (which I know you wouldn't be) then go for it..can't wait to see your images
Thanks... Hopefully the 105/2.8 can help with this.. it is my longest fastest lens...

'Adelaide Meet #3' is starting at 5:20am on Monday 25 April with the Anzac Dawn Serice, and then moving onto other locations. Discretion will be observed at the Dawn Service, to respect those who gave their lives, so we can enjoy our freedom today, tomorrow, and for the future.

When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.
It's little bit long for shooting wide but great for head shot in distance, the 50/1.4 may do the job but it's restricted. The WA is the most useful in capture the full scene of the dawn service. Birddog114

Yes wide is good for capturing the whole scene but for the cauldron and speaker I need something a bit tighter...

70-200VR is excellent for this service and it's superb in portrait shooting. Birddog114

\ fozzie, Remember! All the service men, they all have their rifles with them and they can shoot live bullets not your 70-200 The 70-200VR will serve you well, the 17-55 is a back up lens. If you want to shoot with the 17-55DX you have to find a good location can cover the scene otherwise will be useless, the 70-200VR will be in opposite. Birddog114

Re: Dawn services and marches, taboo?
I don't think that there would be any problem whatsoever... As long as: - You act with discretion - You act with sensitivity - You show that you have an interest - You engage your subjects and if they have a problem - you delete your photo... Cheers, John

I agree with Matt, I think you will get a very positive response Scott, and I look forward to seeing your shots.

Hi Guys,
Not having been to the Dawn Service at the War Memorial before, could someone please advise when to arrive, parking, best place to go see the service, without interfering with the ex-servicemen etc. Do you think for example, there may still be parking at the Memorial at say 4.30am. Regards Nige
Nigel,
The Dawn Service starts at 5.30am, so I'd think if you were there by 4.30am you'd get a spot in the Northern carpark (the Campbell High School side) indicated roughly in the area of section 38 on this map. A major road reconstruction is underway on the Fairbairn Ave side the War memorial, however I'd think that the carpark accessible from that side would surely be available for the busiest day of the year at the AWM. Failing that, there's carparking available on the side streets off Anzac Parade, ie Elimatta Street on the map above, or Currong Street /Anzac Park on this this map (apologies if you're familiar with Canberra...) I'm lucky enough that I live not far from the War Memorial and have walked over for the last few years, so thats about as much as I know re parking. The programs for both the main and dawn ceremonies are available here http://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/anzac/program.asp ps. The Fly-over in the main ceremony last year was incredible (I think it was a RAN Orion?) so have your D70 ready!
As someone who will be marching (in Syd) i say. 'Take heaps of photos, not too much flash, i'll be perving at the sheilahs in the crowd and i don't want my vision imparied.'
Steve.

G'day Fozzie, I'll start with my 85mm 1.4 and I'll be taking my 17-55 as well. Just out of curiosity, will you be using your 70-200 VR during/at the service? or for the follow up meeting? Do you know of anyone else that has committed to the Adelaide dawn service? BTW I've sorted a place for breakfast following the service. Cheers, Mick. P.S I can't wait - only 5 more sleeps
Hi Mick,
I will be taking all my lenses. Dawn Service, then breakfast, before an excursion along North Terrace, followed by the Adelaide Zoo. The 70-200VR will be coming along. xorl/mark is a possibility, and I will be chasing up other people for all or part of the events of the day. I expect to be at the Adelaide Zoo around 9:30-10am. If you would like to join in, please feel free to add to this post or PM. I am too, looking forward to the day, even if it is starting at 5:20am. Cheers, fozzie
