What I've found down here in Melbourne at Kayell is that they rent out like old model lenses. So it's not like you can try out the latest bits of glass. They do rental out latest camera bodies though.

WW,

what would you like to hire ?
A thought I have:
See, there is a number of Canberra DSLR users.
So with a bit of luck somebody might have what you are interested in.
Again, this is just a thought; perhaps we should get together with our gear.

Regards,
CD

Willy wombat,

How about listing the lenses you are interested in, and may be someone on the forum who lives in Canberra can assist rather than renting

ChristianD, I don't think there is any Melbourne users that would let me out with their 500MM F/4 for a weekend. I could tell you now there would be a lot of rubber being burnt as soon as I had one of these in my hands :)

CD,
I think another meet / lens lusting session sometime soon is probably a good idea - we have a fair bit of kit between us (I've picked up 50/1.4 in the US since the last meet  )

WW - what are you interested in? maybe one of the Canberra members have what you're looking at?

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions re hirinh gear in the ACT guys. I didnt want to impose on any of the members, but of course if there are kind souls out there who are willing to lend me some equipment for an hour or two i wouldnt say no. I just want to get a feel of what i like, and what is worth forking out $$$ for?

It would also be nice to meet up with someone and perhaps go for a shoot somewhere in the region. Im a friendly person and would like to meet like-minded photo nuts for a chat, shoot, etc.

Since you guys asked i am looking at picking up one or two of the following lenses.

Nikon 50/1.4
Nikkor AF-D 105mm/2.8 Micro
Nikkor 70-180 Micro
Nikon 80-400VR

Along with an SB800, Im hoping like all hell that the tax man comes through for me this year.

Birdy a 500-600 mm is probably a bit out of my price range, but i would love to hold one for a little bit  8)

Thinking back, various Canberra members have on hand:
50/1.4 - yes
105/2.8 - yes
70-180... mmm, you may be convinced to loose the micro and go with the the 70-200/2.8 VR by ChristianD
80-400... would love one, but don't have one.
SB-800... yes

70-180 micro lens is closed to the price of the 80-400VR
It won't give you lot of reach with distance, it's good with micro works if what you're after.

Birdy - you must be a good salesman.

MHD - A meet in August would be great. Excuse my ignorance but what is the AA minimeet?
