Welcome dude!

New 500D is what I'd start you off with, warranty is so much easier to maintain as well as features would be easier to use as a beginner. Thats my personal input on that, plus.. to be honest the best way to find out is to actually go into a shop and play with them first before deciding.. as tempting as the 50D may sound.. it might not be the right camera for you YET.

If you neede any further questions answered you can just post it up in general discussion =D would be alot easier =D hahah

550D would be better rather than 500D new I think.

You will definitely need to handle these. 50D is a huge difference in ergonomics to the 550D. Then the 550D seems a little more feature rich! Canon wants you to be very very confused.

very right you are Surenj. I also back the 550D up in this instance considering that :
a) High ISO is so much better and challenges the 7D also.
b) Resolution.... guess its something
c) ergonomics.. its such a lightweight puppy. haha Canon's Ninja. compared to the 50D (the sumo).
d) Overall ease of use and functionality.

You're money is better spent in that domain, though it is $350extra from the 500D, it's $350 worth of 2 years technology ahead of both the 50D and the 500D.

Agreed, the 550d looks to be very feature rich! plus boasts possibly the best rear LCD in the Canon lineup.

I went from a 400D to 50D and didnt notice alot of changes in image quality, it was just more comfortable to use.

If you feel comfortable with the smaller model (500 or 550) I'd say go for it over a 2nd hand body.(and possibly unknown faults or just a bit more wear and tear)

The other practical difference is in the cards- if you have a bunch of CF cards the 50d might make sense as the smaller models use SD.

550D ... easily and definitively... It's a better camera. It's worth stretching your budget.

The 50D was a mistake. Many people regard the 40D as a better camera in terms of image quality. I think the IQ of the 50D and the 500D would be the same (give the specs). What you get in the 550D is new (better) technology than the 50D. Basically when it comes to camera bodies, you are buying a chip to whack on the back of your glass.

When it comes to image quality, with today's sensors, your LENS is your most important consideration when it comes to image capturing equipment.

What lens you are getting is the more important concern.

FYI:

http://photo.net/equipment/canon/digita ... 2i/review/

Rebel T2i vs EOS 50D

Technically the EOS 50D is a more advanced model than the Rebel T2i, though based on features that’s getting kind of hard to justify. While the 50D is better in some areas it lags behind the T2i in others.

For example, the 50D has microfocus adjustment, a 1/8000s shutter speed, a better AF system with 9 cross sensors, two LCDs, a rear QCD (Quick Control Dial), a faster continuous shooting rate with a larger image buffer and a larger viewfinder with a true pentaprism. The 50D also feels more solid then the Rebel T1i and its size and shape may fit larger hands better.

On the other hand the Rebel T2i has video capability, which the EOS 50D lacks and that may be a significant factor for some users. While the T2i can’t yet quite compete with a dedicated video camcorder in terms of features, it’s nevertheless very convenient to have both still and video capability in one camera – and the video quality is outstanding. The T2i also has a higher pixel count sensor, a wider exposure compensation range and 63 zone metering.

I can’t help feeling that given the features of the T2i and EOS 7D, the EOS 50D is looking pretty dated. There are constant rumors of an EOS 60D, but as of the time of writing (April 2010) there has been no announcement from Canon and the rumors are just rumors. If a 60D is ever released I’d expect it to have much the same feature set as the T2i, but with a rear QCD, a true pentaprism, microfocus adjustment and a slightly higher frame rate and larger buffer. It’s also possible that there be no 60D and the 7D will be the successor to the 50D. Time will tell and I’m making no predictions.

read the conclusion too...
