No noise removal tools used?

Exposure must have been nailed perfectly.

Arthur if that is real it is amazing. On the link you gave iso 50 & 3200 look the same. It was never that way on film.

it's really hard to tell when the images have been reduced in size so much.

True, but factors like aperture and shutter speed in omparing both the low ISO and the high ISO could be compared to see if it's possible or even real, and while they could certainly be faked too, it would be helpful to see. :)

Quite possibly.....though I'm sure those people out there that just love to plant the seed of misinformation are well on top of this.

If it is true & is an indication of what is around the corner, we can only expect that almost all future cameras (by all manufacturers) will be pushing the envelope with their high ISO settings.

Can only be a good thing for digital photography :)

There is enough noise in the photo to assume it is indeed taken at 3200iso, but if it is true then it is mightily impressive. Now, couple the 5D with Nikon glass and there is one hell of a nice outfit.

Imagine taking pics at t3200 at 2.8 with VR and minimal noise, you wouldn't need a tripod anymore.

One thing i did like about the canon was the 800-3200 iso range , heres a few shots i took with my 1DMKII in China a few months ago, all shots at iso 3200 hand held no flash & no tripods with a sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lens its all i had with me at the time, i shot around 250 shots on the night all were keepers, from the camrea no PP at all

Hi

Postby yeocsa on Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:17 pm

i understand. well, the pictures are not taken by me. They are taken from a camera review website.

However, judging by the images on the various ISO, the noise level is very low and metering is dead accurate. The gap between Nikon and Canon has widen again. At this rate, Canon is far ahead of the pack. The closest competitor in the noise arena to Canon would be Fuji S3 Pro.

Arthur, I see you've defected to Canon...

There's nothing wrong with high ISO on any modern SLR camera, if exposed well and you don't clip either end of the histogram too hard (or at all), you'll end up with good workable images.

I personally don't believe noise level differences are all that pronouned between the brands - it's mostly a stereotype. Having tested the D70 and 20D side by side, D2X with 1D2, etc. the differences were far less than what I had been lead to believe, having heard Canon users sprout off the 'noisy Nikon' myth. Examples

Hi

Postby yeocsa on Tue Aug 30, 2005 11:20 pm

i have not defect to Canon. In fact I had defected from Canon to Nikon. I was using 10D before switching to D70. I was comfortable in using ISO800 on 10D. But with D70, I stick with IS0200 most of the time.

Nothing from Nikon will beat the D2x atm, even with the D200, perhaps the new D3x in early or mid of 2007.

The d2x noise isn't necessarily "bad" up high, but it does make the image rapidly softer due to noise reduction that you cannot turn off completely. (i.e. even when off, it says it still does it - just less)

The 20d which I have I'm sure also does in camera noise reduction, but it's far ahead of the d2x. In fact when I did my first few tests, I accidentally have the 20d set to 3200 iso and was still impressed by it, thinking it was 1600 iso. The 5D has a larger sensor, and should be even better theoretically.

We have tried using the d2x at weddings at 1600/3200 iso but it's no good, although the noise is a lot more "film like" than the d2h. Frankly IMHO even 800 is marginal. Below that it's fantastic.

Amazing shots there. Can't believe it looks sharp in ISO 3200.

I wonder what '30D' will come up in image quality (high ISO) when released in PMA next Feb.

For now, 5D is too far out of my budget. Most of my shots are in low light situations and often i use ISO800-1600 in D70. ISO1600 is unacceptable - the amount of noise is unbearable and very hard to edit.

I'll just have to sit down tight till Feb for some solid news.

Another example of the superiority of digital photography over analogue. Just look at the purity of colour and the lack of fuzz and grain!
