1DS MkII at 25/2 mini meet

At the 25/2 mini meet at Birdy's we had the good fortine to play with an EOS 1DS MkII and kit. Tthere was a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens, speedllite 550EX flash and a more standard range lens (EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM I think but not being a Canon man I can't remember the exact details - no doubt Leigh will be along later to correct them)

Leigh has been given this little box of goodies for a job he has. Thought I'd share some pics (click a pic to see a bigger version):

The big beast itself (and big it was - heavier than a Nikon D2X which is it's nearest equivalent in the Nikon range)

Leigh may need to increase his gym program if he is going to be lugging that lot around for any length of time.

Lucky champ with $30k of equipment which he has in his hand.
Does he know how to master it? Yes, he'll and be one of Canon fans and will post many long threads in Canon coral.

Marco,

I think he's probably less happy with the input.

While we've yet to see how the in-camera sharpening works, it's an undisputed fact that the Canon's have quite superior low noise capabilites when compared with the Nikons.

But this comes at a cost, and that cost is the inherent sharpness of the images. As good as the Canon glass is, the Canon raw images are much softer than the Canon equivalents.

While some might like this, that's certainly not my preference, and I would much rather see some noise in a sharp image, than see no noise in an image that's too soft and does not really reproduce what I saw.

This is undoubdetedly a serious area of trade-off, and I accept that many will prefer the smothness and softness.

But why go and pay all that money for good glass if the camera's internal processing is going to render that glass's benefits null and void?

I have not shot with a 1D myself, but that is surprising.

I have gotten some super sharp shots from my 20D and 70-200 2.8. I would be checking focus issues (Canon does have that more often than Nikon) before blaming anything inherent.

Jdear,
Pls. update: how far are you going with all your dream to own a DSLR?

:P not very far...

I am doing a few websites, and hoping to create some greeting cards to help the savings scheme.

My wife and I enrolled in Ken Duncan's Hamilton Island photography workshop in July, URL here. So savings are aimed towards that.

I am really hoping to have purchased a DSLR for this holiday :) (rather not buy 100+ rolls of film :P )

Im keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand D2H (loved yours) and keeping on eye on the D200 development.

ta for asking :)

Jonathan

Jonathan,

Did you see the link earlier this week where Hoto Reisel in the city were selling pre-owned D70s kits for sub 1K?

I've been told from one of my friends, who was looking for a cheapist D70 kit: They're all gone within couple hours after they were announced.
