Just wondering if any (Canon) forum members out there have the EF 100mm f2.8 Macro lens.

Your thoughts and feedback on the lens?

Can it be used as 2 lens? (macro and portait)

i've used one before at school, great lenses. heaps of plastic.
too bad someone dropped it and its now missing part of the front plastic thread.

Yes. It is an excellent lens for macro and portait. Its AF is fast enough for portait unless its Sigma and Tamron equivalents.

We have it to take wounds. On a 20D the AF sometimes gets confused and locks up on non-challenging shots. i.e. plenty of light, high contrast scenes well past its minimum focus point. It can get annoying, but to get around it MF.

Overall I like the lens, but it is very plastic like in construction.

I have the 100 Macro and like it a lot.

AF is a little slow but I have used it for portrait work until I got my 70-200 2.8. Example:

I'd also consider the Sigma 150/2.8 macro, a little more reach (possibly too much for upper body portraits, but still good for headshots and candid - ask Sheila about her 135/2) and I expect it'll be about the same price.

Of course, it will come with a crappy Sigma end cap so budget to replace that with a Canon one
