Recommend a flash for the 350D

I recently added a 350D to my wife's Canon system (her first real digital camera, an incredible bargain secondhand in mint condition), and I'm looking for a decent flash for it.

I don't have much knowledge of Canon systems, other than what I've picked up along the way (putting her film system together). I would prefer a flash which would also work well with her EOS A2. I'm currently considering the 540 EZ.

The 540EZ will not have all the eTTL functions on a 350D, this means the camera and flash will not communicate to set the correct flash.
Have a look at this site for great Canon camera info, its split into various sections to help find the information you want. You just need to register to use the forums.

The best option would be the Canon 580EX but retails for around $680. The next best option and still a wonderfull flash is the 430EX retailing for about $480.
The 580EX has more power, range, more functions and is able to control other flash units remotely.
The 430EX has a little less range and is unable to control other units, but you can still use it for bounce flash, and it has plenty of power for most people.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to go with the 430EX.

I recently picked up a 430ex from birdy and I love it. In the future (when I get better at this) the aim is to use it as a slave to a 580EX
