Go Canon... once again pissing off users who bought something from their semi-pro range (30D) by making a more plasticy but better version of it at a cheaper price.

:D

Could say the same about Nikon and the D80 improvements over the D200 - slighty improved autofocus, lower high ISO noise, no short-banding, same extra large VF.

Technology marches on.

Don't jump to conclusions. I for one don't feel pissed off (I currently use a 30D and a 350D).

Mind you, I'm sure there'll be wailing and gnashing of teeth over this. Somehow lots of people got upset when the 10D came out because they'd just bought D60s. In that case there was a significant price drop, but it had been obvious for months that a replacement was coming.

The 400D is an enhancement of the 350D, but for me the 30D is still "more" of a camera. 11% more pixels in each direction is not significant, and the dust removal portends similar features in the 30D's and 5D's successors. It will be interesting to see how that technology settles down as people use the 400D.

Actually like many people I had expected a 10 Mp sensor in the 30D, but I guess Canon didn't have their 10 Mp production capacity up to speed when they introduced the 30D. :(

THe 400D is not in the same league as the 30D or whatever it's replacement is going to be in the near future. It is a replacement for the 350D and it does a nice job in that area of the market. It does not have spot metering or 5 fps or tough body or 3200 ISO etc etc, it does have 10mp etc in a small, easy to hold body. Different market and for those who are buying their forst DSLR it will be a great camera maybe even an excellent camera, for those looking to upgrade, then they will pass over this model.
The good thing though, is the anti dust system may find itself onto other models, if it proves to work well and makes the next upgrade of the 30D even more interesting...still wondering what they are really going to announce come september though..

And only 14 days to market (we'll see, but still far better than Nikon)

No trouble beating Nikon on that score. It would be embarrassing for anyone who couldn't. :)

Jordan, go look at how long Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for...

They (3D Realms) currently hold the title for longest time to get a product out.

Confusing

I must say, I find the naming of cameras a bit confusing. But it seems to me that the 400 is the replacement for the 350 as the 30D seems to have been the replacement for the 20D. So as far as I can make out those of us that bought recently the 30D has still a few months grace to getting used to the idea that a replacement is on its way as soon as Canon has sold its last batch aster all it is consumerism.

Wow, and I thought it was just all rumours!
A little bit disappointed that if I get one, I won't be able to use my BP-511 collection in the camera, but it looks alright - as I'm planning to get another body before I have my 300D converted to an IR camera :)

Check this...

Camera bodies are going to get upgraded every few months. One of the things I liked about this site is the lack of measurebators -- unlike, for example Dpreview where you can bet they're agnoising over it and cursing Canon. It's what they do for fun. At the time we bought our gear it looked good.

As for me; first thing I looked at was the frame rate. 3fps. My 30D does 5. So not even close to being worth an upgrade. Don't care about the extra 2Mp, 8 is plenty for a dual-page spread. Wouldn't mind the dust sensor technology but I can wait. No ISO3200.

If my 30D broke I'd get another, not the 400D.

it isn't an upgrade for the 30D, its for the 350D.

I know, but sometimes the lower range jumps the range above, and some people were comparing it to the 30D. And in fairness the 400D has some advantages over the 30D.
