How much would a second hand 70-200 f/4 (NON IS) be worth?

Hi everyone

I'm looking to up-grade from the kit lenses that came with my 350D and was thinking of the Tamron 17-50 2.8 & the Canon 70-200 f/4.

I have been looking at a second hand 70-200 f/4 L (non IS) for $850 incl post. As much as I would love the IS i'm on a pretty tight budget at the moment. Also I'm off to the NT shortly and really need a good lens to take pics of all the sights. Normally, I would just wait and just save for the f/4 IS (not the 2.8 due to the weight) but I've only got 6 weeks and don't want to be kicking myself that I didn't have a decent lens on the trip. I know that later on I will probably up-grade to the IS but do you think I should take the plunge and buy the non IS for the trip?? Is $850 reasonable?

I just had another thought. Maybe I could buy it for the trip, hold on to it until i have saved the balance for the IS version & then sell it.........does that sound like a feasible idea?

Welcome to the club If you think you can get away with not having the IS, bring a tripod or a monopod as well just in case.

Well....they do say that you don't miss what you have never had I know for sure that I will want the IS later but I'm so used to lugging my tripod around now that it should be no biggie to have to keep lugging it around for a while longer.

I just can't fork out the $1600 for the IS yet....I don't have a job to go to and will be relying on my savings for a while.

In another thread, I have been recommended Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM Macro. It is a good lens. There’s another one from Sigma which is just as good if not better - Sigma 100-300mm F/4.
These lenses are relatively new; I don’t think you will find used on the market.
