hey guys, with the recent release of the 450D, which is super ceding the 400D, i was wondering what teh next model to supercede the 40D is going to be? and what kind of time frame on it's release is expected and what improvements over the 40D to expect...

anyone in the know?

extpect 50D feb 2009(just before PMA 2009) xxD series is updated every 18 months, as to specs who know? it's pretty much a guessing game... maybe 12MP, better LCD, contrast detection AF method in live view, UDMA CF support, weather seals?

hmmm....a year away eh? cause i'm pretty tempted by the 40D at the moment, i've found a great deal for a 40D body, battery grip, plus 3 extra batteries for $1600 while stock lasts.

just wondering if i should be waiting, or going at it...

would it be worth the upgrade from the 400D?

Depends on what the 400D is NOT doing for you now? The only real advantage besides size/build quality is, auto focus performance, 6 FP/s burst, and live view. Overall image quality is very similar.

i know, that's pretty much my reasoning for NOT doing the upgrade, at this point in time i would be more tempted with the 450D, but i would rather make a step up, not a step sideways, if you get my analogy.

which is why the idea of the next model in the xxD line is intriguing me.

which is why I asked... what exactly is the 400D preventing you from doing? How is it limiting your photography?

nothing really
however, i wanna make that move to the next level of camera, the xxD series, and my logic train is kinda saying to get off the 400d bandwagon, while i can still sell it for a reasonable price, and go for a 40D, then do the same when the next model comes out. basically, i'll have to outlay less for the next up from the 40D, if i can sell a 40D to make up some of the cost

does that logic make a bit of sense, or am i kidding my self?

EDIT: i found an even better price for the 40D, i can get a body and grip for a cool $1450. maybe i'm addicted to new technology?

Well it's not my style to judge people, so if really get off on upgrading when it not warranted, then so be it. What would make more sense is to keep your 400D for another year and spend your cash on some lovely canon lenses until the 50D comes around.

lol, i love it when people talk sense into me.

it is a tempting prize, but not a warranted upgrade....

i 'm sure i have far better things to spend my hard earned moneys on.

thanks guys, but i'll still be keeping my eye on what the 50D turns out to be.

thanks!

dont listen to reason- if you can afford it go for it!! (hopefully my wife doesnt read this!)

I'm in the same position as you- ive got a 400D and happy. But unlike in the days of film when the camera was just a lightproof box and it was all about the lens, its not the case now. I am resigned to having to upgrade every couple of years- unlike my film cameras which I held for 5 years each (EOS 5 then EOS 3). Not to mention my MF folders which were 50 years old and my absolute favourties.

I dont know which way to go re 450 or 40. The big improvement for me would be live view, and the only reason I'm hesitating with the 450 is switch to SD cards. Factoring that cost of new cards into the equation and the 40D looks good (as well as better build but I am very careful with my gear- rain is my only enemy.

The 40D can be had at Discount Digital for $1260 or $1340 with kit lens. I bought this lens by itself a few months ago and after some testing it has replaced 3 primes!! Its very sharp and contrasty. Still need the 50 1.8 for wide aperture but at f8 the new 18-55 IS is as good as most of us need. (even though as I type this I cant get my mind off a 35 f1.4). http://www.d-d-photographics.com/canon40d.htm They also appear to have a Brisbane pick up.

My bottom line- I'll probably procrastinate and like you my good judgement will keep the 400D in my bag for another year.. :(
