Remote for AV / TV

Postby Wocka on Wed Jul 09, 2008 10:00 am

Does anyone know if there is a remote for the Canon that allows you to control Shutter and Aperture via the remote.

From searches I have done, it seems that you can control the shutter and that's it.

While doing HDR shots I thought it would be nice to be able to adjust these settings instead of touching the camera itself, possibly causing movement. Like tetherd shooting with a PC.

Cheers.

Nope. The remotes connect via a 3-pin interface which only control the shutter half-press and press. To control the camera settings remotely you'd have to take a UMPC (e.g. an eeePC) into the field and connect via USB (or WiFi on recent bodies with the right adapter).

For HDR shooting you generally set up the exposures via AEB (bracketing) and then just shoot.
You can do it with 3 individual presses of the shutter (or 6 if you have MLU on) for the 3 exposures. Or there's another option:
Enable the self-timer (2s is OK) and AEB. Then when you press the remote release the timer will activate and the 3 bracketed shots will be taken without further intervention.

Unfortunately at the moment if you don't have a 1-series body you're stuck with 3 shots at up to +- 2EV (1-series can do +- 3EV, and recent ones can do 2,3,5, or 7 shots). If you need more you're going to have to reach over to the camera and roll the front dial (in M) to adjust the shutter speed between shots. But that's not really going to cause much movement if you have a decent tripod/head!

Maybe there's incentive for someone to come up with a 3rd-party remote that has a microcontroller inside and connects to the camera via USB. Then you could program almost any behaviour into it...
