450D vs 1000D

I have a 400D which my sister's fiance really enjoys playing with so my Mum has decided to get him a DSLR as a wedding prezzy - Basically because its going to be in the family i figure there isnt a point in considering something like Nikon or the Fuji (althought I am mildly infatuated with teh S5).

I've been looking at the 450 and 1000 and other than the very minor differences I really cannnot see much to set them apart from each other - its like vanilla and vanilla bean icecream - essentially the same but not. I dont expect him to take up photography professionally or passionately but he is rather keen and every time we go out with my baby he spends a fair bit of time having a play with the lenses and likes takign shots n so forth. They'll also be doing a massive thailand and India trip at the end of the year so a nice piece of equipment wud come in handy there too i suppose....

Basically wondering whether anyone had any clues to which might be best in the given context???

lol although if i had my way I'd get 'him' the 50D and swap my 400D for it in a few months but somehow i dont think i can swing that :P

Just a suggestion, your 400D uses CF card, and 450D uses SD card (its cheaper though) have you ever condsidering purchasing 40D. But to your question 450D vs 1000D i'd go for 450D

Great link! Confirms exactly why I would vote 1000D.

7 vs 9 AF points - not really an issue
2.5" vs 3" (same number of dots, so the 2.5" should be clearer)
10MP vs 12MP - not a huge difference either
no IR wireless remote - get a Phottix Cleon, better product than both the IR and the wired remotes from Canon
3fps vs 3.5fps - not really an issue
5 RAW frames vs 6 RAW frames - not an issue, neither come close to the 10 RAW frames of the 400D

EDIT: I just checked current pricing on the two models the EOS 450D has fallen a fair bit and for Twin IS kit there is only about $100 difference at Tom Saades Camera House (Parramatta) so why not the 450D

i went a 450d with twin lense kit.

main reason was there wasnt that much of a difference in price. and the camera salesman showed me how the 450d has a steel lense mount where the 1000d has plastic lense mounts

Really not much difference between the 2 cameras.

BUT the 450D is SIGNIFICANTLY better in my hands, there's actually rubber in the grip.

Really, i'll have to have a look next time I see a 1000D. Seems rather shoddy to have a plastic lens mount.
