Is there a way to down oad from a canon 40d direct to a pocket hard drive?

The wireless attachment does not meet the cost criteria (about a grand). Net book computers are about $550.

Just going away and want to down load pics to a pair of pocket hard drives.

Are there any options here. (next trip is a week in Cairns, two weeks in Papua NewGinea highlands, then a few more days in Cairns area (atherton and Daintree)

What do peope do about storing their shots when traveing "light"

The cheapest way these days is to invest in CF cards. Easy peasy

I vote MSI U100+ and a USB CF card reader!

There are some devices that have a HDD and built in card readers AND are battery powered, but these are expensive.

I've used the previous model to this DigiMate without any problems. Just take the card out of the camera and stick it in the slot, push "Go" and it DL's to the HDD. Rechargeable battery, also useful as a portable USB HDD.

Muzz, does this little digimate downoad raw images ok?

Currently i have to download via the canon software.
I usually shot in jpg and raw. If I read the card direct to the computer (Vista) then I get the JPG and a second jpg instead of the raw. I do not know why.

No problem with RAW. It's not lightning fast but if you have more than one card it won't matter. Mine has the older IDE drive and can only be formatted as FAT-32 which limits the size to 32GB (I think). The one on ebay is SATA and perhaps doesn't have the same limitations - probably worth asking a couple of questions.

I ran into this issue with Nikon and WinXP. I found that XP did an automatic (poor) conversion if I connected via PTP, but not if I connected via MassStorage. It assumed if it was a camera, it must be jpg Grrr!
