I'm thinking about getting a new 5D with number of IS lenses after few nights on the jobsite (8 hours/ night) with one of my best customer!

No, I'm not switching nor jumping ship, just want another extra toys to play along with my Nikon gears.

Birdy, i too have thought this way as you know i like Nikon and have nothing against canon, but would be ineteresting to see how it stacks up against the Nikon. What is the harm of maybe having the best of both worlds, hey it's like Holden and Ford i dont mind both as long as it does what you want it too do. Go for it.
Who know maybe even would be good to cater for the canon guys, with some lens i know Poon keeps few canon stuff so yeh we look forward to your thoughts on this camera etc...

No, I'm not thinking that way, I'm sure Nikon is the best IMHO.

The main reason I would like to venture with the 5D, coz what else can I buy on Nikon camp? I got almost the best of Nikkor lenses (50) apart from the 200VR/ 300/ 400/ 600 which I do not intent to get them, I also have the D100/ D2h and D2x body, of course will do the same with the D200 or any Nikon DSLR once released in the near future.

The 5D is just my thinking: to have something totally new with all the new experiment & experiences.

Stockton beach is a huge place, one side is beautiful beach and water, other side is magnificient sand dunes + heap of shooting opportunities. could be a great place for all the mini meet.

In all seriousness, if I had the cash flow, I'd look this way too.

I see no harm in having both a Canon and a Nikon, especially one as a capable as the 5D.
Nikon seem to have a problem with their release schedule in that, it isn't anywhere near as effective as Canon's.

The only problem I have with the Canon bodies is that they don't feel right in my hands, but I'm sure that's something I could get over if I were shelling out that much cash on one.

Honestly! I would like to learn: Is it FULL FRAME or FULL SIZE sensor and want to see what the difference are?.

This is just my personal problems: I want to buy a Skyhawk Model 172R or a Robin same as Thadeus flew recently.

And back to the sky, so I can cut short my travelling time in between Bankstown and Newcastle, to go to my DRP, or extend to other regions for my photography and other hobbies.

My other half is getting upset and cranky, totally unhappy, she does not want me to fly again due to many accidents lately with the small a/c.

She doesn't care about my spending, which I spend on camera gears but not on the aircraft, she's happy to tag along all the tracks wherever i go out shooting and supporting me 100% in photography but I can't convince her to sit with me on a small a/c nor accepting my proposal to buy a Cessna

So, I have only one of my choice: back to photography hobby.

Or find a new hobby. Can we interest you in a seat in a racecar? What about nice 7 metre yacht, perhaps?

In all honesty, I think there is much to be gained from having two systems available to one's self, Uncle Birddog, especially when your favourite nephew is waiting to play with your toys.

Buy a really nice remote-control airplane.
Rig the cockpit up with two cameras set at an eye-level based separation.
Post-process (or get someone to post-process) and edit the video so that you can view it stereographically.

It's not the same, but not only can you fly the remote control plane, but you can view it in 3d and take high resolution full-frame images on your new 5D.

HKG will have them by next month (hopefully) and I'll have my pre-order in with HKS late today, pricing hasn't been confirmed yet! but I'll keep all of you posted once I got my clearance.

If you're looking for a broad range of focal lengths in zooms I would have thought three would be the right number (I'm considering getting a 5D within the next 9 months so a little thought has gone into this):

1. I have a 17-40mm WA already.
   Some people prefer the 16-35mm/2.8.
2. I have the 28-135mm/3.5-5.6 IS USM and am considering upgrading this to the new 24-105mm/4 L IS USM depending on user feedback and the cost.
   Some people would prefer the 24-70mm/2.8 L USM.
3. At the longer end the 70-200mm/2.8 IS is a good choice.

I presume you'll get RRS or Wimberley plates to fit the foot of the 70-200? Until the custom plates come out for the 5D you'll have to use a Wimberley P-5 plate on the body (it's an excellent plate).

Nope, but I used to have a 1 foot high plastic Darth Vader statue (complete with detachable light sabre and fabric cape) and a matching scale fully articulated C3PO and R2D2, but when I moved house in 1986 they went to the tip (foolish, foolish move - how much would they be worth now )

Get the Wimberley P-5. It's not an L bracket but it will give you a very solid and low-profile Arca-Swiss mount. When you get the L bracket you can put the P-5 in the cupboard for use with the next camera (whatever that is).

Well, I still have the L barckets on my two D2s and still use the D2s, let the 5D play with handholding while am waiting for the L bracket.

You're exactly right! tried it on the 1Ds MKII not long ago with my 200-400VR.

Peter,

As far as I'm aware, the adaptors are a physical interface only, and won't permit any of the electronics to talk between Canonm and Nikkor, so you'd lose all AF and AE functionality.

Personally, I wouldn't be happy with that.

The Canon lens lineup has always seemed much more logical to me than the Nikon one. ANY EF or TSE lens can be used on ANY EOS camera. Autofocus, metering, IS, it all "Just Works" (ok, so a couple of the older bodies disable IS for some reason).
Because Nikon has been trying to maintain some level of backwards compatibility with their oldest cameras and lenses, the feature matrix has got very complex.

The 3 EF-S lenses are the only exception in the Canon range (but they're not EF lenses, so it doesn't matter) and they're equivalent to the Nikkor DX lenses in that you wouldn't want to use them on a full-frame body anyway...

Yep, there's a lot to be said for maintaining backwards compatibility, but personally I think that Canon did a good thing in the '70s when it drew a line in the sand and adopted an all-new mount with electronic interfacing. The product line since then has been (this is a personal opinion, remember ) a much more straightforward affair than Nikon's collection.
Like I said, every lens since then has worked with every body since then.

Of course, since I entered the Canon family in 2000 I wasn't coming in at the start and there was 20+ years of established EOS system for me to use, so I'm probably biased...

I wouldn't get your hopes up with the 16-35/2.8 - The nikon 17-35/2.8 (which I'm guesing you probably have) walks all over it.

As you know I'm going to Canon, but not being a super wide angle guy I'm going to live with the 24mm wide end of the 24-70/2.8. The other lenses I have are the 85/1.2 and the 135/2, both of which appear to be really top glass.

If you want something "new" to try in the nikon camp, try and get your hands on one of the kodak slr/n's - it's FF and believe me from 160-320 iso it makes a mockery of the d2x.

I have the Nikkor 17-35, very happy with it and it's permanent sealed on my D2x, and never want to try the 17-55Dx.

I'm new to Canon camp and am still learning! the 16-35/2.8 is one of the lens I'm looking at, I also have the option try it if not happy then sell it.

On the prime side, I'm also looking at the 85/1.2 and the 135/2.

I'm not very happy with Kodak, and they now or sooner will no longer making or supporting their DSLR range. That why I want a 5D and hopefully it'll bring me to the new field.

The really hardcore wide angle canon guys buy a zeiss 21mm and mount it with adapter. Apparently it kills anything else like it. I think they are mega bucks though.

Kodak have already discontinued all their DSLRs. Anything you buy now will be clearance stock and will not be updated with new models. Some level of support will be around for a while, but it doesn't make it seem like an attractive proposition!
