Quick Question about Nikon Lens

Postby bumthology on Mon Mar 26, 2007 3:27 pm

Hi
I was just curious if the Nikon 17-55 allows F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range.
For future reference how would i know which lenses allow their fastest f-stop throughout the range? and which ones dont?

thanks

edit: Was also curious about the sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4 too

Bumthology,

If it's the 17-55 DX f2.8 then it's constant f2.8 throughout. You can tell by seeing if there's only one number followed by the f. If there is a range, for example the sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4, then it varies according to the zoom.

Did you check the manufacturer's specifications for the lens?

They will provide the quickest way to get this answer.

Also, please update your location in your profile so that it is meaningful, and in compliance with our rules. your current location is not satisfactory.

Thanx in advance for your cooperation.

Correct, f2.8 through the whole range.

For future reference how would i know which lenses allow their fastest f-stop throughout the range? and which ones dont?

if it is constant through the whole range, the lens is specified as:
AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED

Only the one number, ie f/2.8

and when it varies, it will be something like:
AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED

where this last one has the range of f/4-5.6 from the wide to long end.

edit: Was also curious about the sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4 too

the sigma 17-35 is a not a constant f2.8. It will be f2.8 at 17mm and go up to f4 by the time it reaches 35mm

HTH,

André

(edit: got to be quick on the keyboard, also edit for sigma lens, not nikkor 17-35)

the 17-35 is a constant f2.8

Are you sure that the 17-35 f/2.8-4 is constant f/2.8? That kinda contradicts what other people are saying...

If you go to the Sigma info page and open the Depth of Field PDF, it only gives results starting at f/4 for 35mm, but they start at f/2.8 for 17mm. I reckon it's f/4 at the long end.

The Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 is, but the Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4 isn't.

My mistage, I hadn't see the Sigma, I thought he was referring to the Nikkor.

cool
thanks that clears things up nicely, and also tells me that the nikkor is a lot better than the sigma for my uses :)

Gstark, what do you mean by my location is not meaningful?
Adelaide, Australia is as meaningful as it gets. :)

First of all, read this.

Please be sure to acquaint yourself with the rest of that page.

Your Profile Page wrote:Location. * :This should be meaningful and something along the lines of suburb and city for Australian members is REQUIRED.

Which part of this are you having difficulty comprehending?

If you are of the belief that "Adelaide, Adelaide" is in compliance with that, please think again.

And before you wander off to change it, "Adelaide, Australia" won't cut it either.
