Katz eye for D700This one looks different to the other focusing screens, it doesn't have the collar around the split prism, anyone tried it to see if it's as good as the other ones? I gather adding the collar might affect the metering and such...

Re: Katz eye for D700I have been very interested in these filters myself, and was wondering if anyone has installed a Katz eyes and how they have found them.

Re: Katz eye for D700Grev, I think you may be right about this.
I bought a cheep copy of a Katz eye screen for my S5pro, and it did mess with the metering, especially with TTL flash. aim54x, they are not hard to fit, but a little fiddly and was good to MF though mine went in the bin due to the metering problem. To anyone who is planning on fitting a new screen, just be carefully not to loose the shims that are under your screen when you remove it, as they are there to keep the screen in the right position for focusing. If they do fall out dont forget to put them back in Mick Nikon D800,D300s X2,F90x,F4e, 18-35AFD,24mm f2, 35mmf2, 50mm f1.8 AFS, 85mm 1.4, 180mm 2.8, SB600, SB800, Elinchrom Quadras.
Re: Katz eye for D700Yikes, thing is I bought the DK-17m viewfinder magnifier (from 0.7x to 1.2x I think) and can manual focus pretty well with the viewfinder on the D700 and the F100, and was thinking a split screen will increase the accuracy and speed even more. But since the one for the D700 that Katz eye is offering don't have the collar around the split screen, I think it might not work as well, but then again if it messes with the metering...! Sigh. PS I bought the accessory that switches the square viewfinder to the round ones in the pro models but even after that the viewfinder magnifier won't fit on... Have to buy the DK-21m for the D300...
PPS don't fit the rubber eyecup after the viewfinder magnifier, too much vignetting afterwards. Blog: http://grevgrev.blogspot.com

Re: Katz eye for D700
I dont think the Katzeye screen would mess with your metering, thats why they cost more. I never used the collar around the split screen, even on my old cameras. but then again I have never used a split screen that didnt have one around it Mick Nikon D800,D300s X2,F90x,F4e, 18-35AFD,24mm f2, 35mmf2, 50mm f1.8 AFS, 85mm 1.4, 180mm 2.8, SB600, SB800, Elinchrom Quadras.
Re: Katz eye for D700
I don't see how it could. IIRC, the metering unit is at the bottom of the mirror box, and metering is either directly from the sensor plane, or more frequently, indirectly through the semi-silvered section in the centre of the reflex mirror, and then reflected down through a secondary mirror mounted behind and attached to the reflex mirror. The viewfinder, and thus the focusing screen, is beyond the scope of the metering system. g.

Re: Katz eye for D700
Mine was a cheep plastic copy, do you think there could have been reflection/refraction off the screen and back onto silvered section on the mirror? When I swapped it back to the normal one, I had no trouble anymore. Mick Nikon D800,D300s X2,F90x,F4e, 18-35AFD,24mm f2, 35mmf2, 50mm f1.8 AFS, 85mm 1.4, 180mm 2.8, SB600, SB800, Elinchrom Quadras.
