I would be pretty stoked with this announcement if I only had a D40/x/60. Otherwise blergh! :P

Actually, the 35mm f/2 lens also has a 52mm thread. This lens gives the DX cameras a "normal" lens, ie equivalent to 50mm on FX. It certainly will work nicely with the D40/D60. Why didn't Nikon introduce just a regular 35mm AF-S, ie non-DX? I suspect cost. They can make this lens pretty cheaply so it fits with their low cost dslrs.

In the end your guess is as good as mine :D

I certainly would have liked to see a new FX 35mm/1.8 AF-S.

It is an inviting lens for anyone with a DX camera that is looking for a cheap prime, 52mm filter thread means all your existing filters for the "kit" lenses (18-55 and 55-200) are compatible. Hopefully it will be CHEAP!

I wont get one, I am trying to keep my DX lenses as few as possible as I am going to go FX with my next camera.

Being a DX lens reassures us that DX is here to stay (all that talk about the lack of new DX lenses has fueled speculation of the end of DX) and as already said, it is probably cheaper to manufacturer as a DX.

Maybe they have a FX 35mm f/1.4 or f/1.2 in the works?

yes, as did the 50/1.4D. but when the 50/1.4afs went to 58, i would have thought that this would be a common theme for the newer primes. i just dont get it unless they drop a 35/1.4 afs on us. even then...

DX is here to stay, affordable and upgradeable. D400 is close to being announced I hear.

The 35 is a "starter prime" for the D40/60 brigade.

Yes.

Hopefully an AF-S 35mm f/1.4 FX will follow suit.

Cheers

If you guys don't know already, Canon's puesdo-standard for their primes or entry zooms are 58mm, I think Nikon is just copying Canon. :P

52mm filter thread has long been Nikon's standard for consumer gear and most primes. The 58mm on the new 50 1.4 is a deviation from the standard.

The f1.4 FX version will probably be announced by the end of the year, and cost at least as much as the Sony and Canon versions (~$2000). So as I'm still very much a DX user, I'll be quite happy to snap this lens up at <$400.

It's a great option for DX size camera users... affordable prime lens, with a useful focal length after applying the crop factor.

I'd be tempted to buy one if I had some cash to spend.

Wheres this rumour from?? 35mm is a great all around lens on fx, i think more versatile than the 50mm if you know the person you are shooting. i've been hoping for this!
