100 replies and counting: Here's the latest on-line chat from today.

Me Send me your D70 and I will figure out what the deal is with it.

Him nah....send it to you to (1) sell on ebay or (2) throw in the ocean....either one works for me....I don't/won't use it so it can rot where its at otherwise

Me What if I could get it to work?

Him nope...digital suxx....I have given up completely....1/100th the latitude of film....VERY poor resolution (I don't care how may giga-pels they 'claim')...ridiculous hard to use controls (regardless of mode) and don't even get me started on 'auto-out-of-focus'......a snapshot technology at best....comparable to a $5 disposable at Walmart.

Him sell it yes...use it...won't happen.

Me ok, I won't ask anymore.

Him I don't see what you could do with it. Do you use some special-secret software? cuz I KNOW these cameras are junk

Me How is it that mine works?

Him you take outdoor natural lighting at f/8....any pin-hole camera does the same.

Him What software do you use?

Me Nikon Capture Editor

Me I have plenty of indoor pics as well on my site.

Him never used it....in fact the computer that I had installed the stuff on a year ago now has a complete processor failure...can't even boot the box.

Him I use photoshop...have too...the color balance is so bad out of the camera it never even comes close

Him out of the camera...all purples are a dark muddy blue..

Him reds are orange and faded

Him contrast is low....

Me I personally think you either have a bad D70 or it needs a tune-up. Believe me, I don't shoot anything in auto and I've tweaked most of the settings.

Me I should say tweaked SOME settings.

Him it took me 10 minutes with the manual last time I used it to find the 'self-timer'....then I just used the remote...and it took one of the 3 pictures I sent you on 'bad nikon christmas'...NO camera fights me this badly.

Him shoot it only in auto (its impossible with their menu crap to do otherwise)....and never tweaked it.

Him of course, I've never tweaked film in 30 years either...but the results are better.

Him the 10 second backlite (that's unreadable without a magnifying glass)....oh it probably works...can't read it

Him I can't read anything close up....got new glasses recently though. backlite...I haven't used the camera in so long I barely remember....is this another known problem?

Me I'm surprised you don't take it to a junkyard and have them crush it up into a little cube, just for some satisfaction.

Him I have a sledge hammer in the garage (ask my 'new' but completely destroyed Panasonic fax machine)

Me LOL!!!!!!

Him what really pixxes me off is I still owe bestbuy $750 for this fuxxer!

Me Return it to them in an envelope.

Me Pour it out onto the counter.

Him there you go. its just one of those things....I'm so burned on electronic stuff....NO good luck in years now. the nikon rots in the back closet....I HOPE the @#$king batteries are dead!

None of this is made up! Enjoy

Still its sad to think of a D70 and peripherals being assulted by a sledge hammer... or worse still being unloved.

Not sure if you are humorously misquoting, but the actual expression is

"A fool and his money are soon parted",

thought to have originated in the 1500's, possibly from Thomas Tusser (who came up with "At Christmas play and make good cheer, For Christmas comes but once a year. ")

I think the following statement is indicative of your friend either being a grade A idiot, not having actually used the camera, or beind blind... or all three!

Him reds are orange and faded

Since when does the D70, which has a sensitivity to red, produce red in anything but red?

It loves red.

Crikey. He's an idiot.

Another proverb is "A Bad Workman Blames His Tools", (variously said
to be French, Syrian or Australian in origin, I suspect everybody thought of it)

I like the fact that he has had the same degree of difficulty with a panasonic fax machine and a digital camera, but has failed to recognise the common denominator - him.

Yes correct on both counts. Although I didn't realise that Thomas Tusser may have been the origin. YMMV.

And of course it's only because I take simplistic photos that mine turn out at all. Heaven forbid I take a picture other than outdoors @ F8.

I should have mentioned his new full time hobby. Are you sitting down? His new hobby is sewing. This is only after dumping $4000 American into a fancy Brother sewing machine.

Oh man, I hope this saga never ends.

I had thought from rummaging over this previously that money wasn't necessarily a big deal for this guy, but he still owes $750 on the thing? Wow, he's a glutton for punishment.

Remind me not to become emotionally involved with electronics. They'll screw over your credit rating, and when you punish it by locking it in the drawer, never to be used by anyone, it doesn't scream for help, and Nikon still has your money.

Tell him that if he sends it to you, you'll tar and feather it, beat it senseless with a stick, and then ridicule it with all your friends.

Fresh Update

Postby thehikingdude on Fri Dec 22, 2006 3:04 am

Amazingly the saga continues. I've just sold my D70 body and have ordered a D200 to replace it. I contacted my 'friend' and told him I had a buyer for his 18-70 lens. After much chatting on-line he said he would think about it. Long story short, he basically decided that he'd rather donate all of it or smash it all up. He reminded me that he has smashed things in the past, I think he'd forgotten that he'd already told me.

So things are still in the same situation. He refuses to even look to see what gear he has. He refuses to send me the gear so I can sell it for him. Who knows, maybe if he lives for another 50 years the stuff will come back up in value as antiques.

And of course he's already told me that the D200 is crap as well.

Jeff,

Donating it would be good. Perhaps to a local high school or art school?

Maybe even the kindergarten?

Anywhere where there's somebody able to use this stuff, rather than have it sitting in his closet gathering dust.

My only question (apart from the rhetorical "why, why, why?") is why did he buy the D70 instead of sticking with his FM?

I propose a new competition: How do you think this guy will make into the Darwin Awards via electronic means?

Final update: I found out last week that he donated the whole thing to his local church and took it as a $500US tax deduction. I would have gladly given him $500+ for it, but he chose to donate it instead.

His new complaint as of yesterday is that the stock market is a big scam. Of course he thought it was great when he was making money. I swear, he has to be bi-polar or something.

Nope. Unless you count his divorce.

Wonder what the description on his apparently also non-focusing wife was worded like ! Now that would make a funny arse thread!

Wow... this has to be one of the most frustrating, yet funniest posts I have ever read on any forum ever. I just read it in its entirety and I'm not quite sure if I need to pee a little, or dig my eyes out with a spoon.

Someone needs to call this guy up and say "Give yourself an uppercut!"

How on earth could you be so closed minded that you don't want to even learn the basics. Ahhhhh! How frustrating. Idiot.

I think you need to check out the EnergyPolice thread then. Even funnier, I think.
