Hi
investigating getting soem sort of personal storage device
one that meets my likig is the Vosonic VP6230

it says it can display raw images from nikon cameras D100, D70, D1x and D1 only

no mention of D2x so i was wondering if the D2X RAW image format is the same as the cameras mentioned if it is that menas i can view my raw files on the device.

Otherwise i will have to get a simpler device like the Nexto CF with no image viewing capability

The other problem is that the image files even if the same format are more than twice the size, especially as the D2X can store uncompressed and the D70 stores compressed NEFs. Email the manufacturer and find out I would suggest

Thanks glen, I have emailed the manufacturer
my compressed NEF'S are around 10MB

the drive is 80gig so that's more than enough for my trip

last time i shot 3000 8megapixel images and dumped them on my ibook which had 20gig free

The D2x RAW is twice larger than the D70/ D100.
Transfer rate + battery + viewing are also issues, slower to dump the whole 2 or 4Gb card into the PSD, battery may not last as use with the D70 and viewing or zooming requires time.

Wendell, for a screen I always have liked Birddys Epson P2000. They had them at Borge's for $899, great screen and definitely displays D2X

Birddog, twice as large? Leighton was saying his were 20mb and he could only get 90 shots on a 4gb card.

I got nearly 200 on my 4gb card with D2x/NEF, I don't know what's he doing?

Approximately 90 shot on a 2Gig card uncompressed, 190 on a 2Gig card compressed.

Multiply this by two for a 4gig card

This is for Raw capture only

so are D2X raw files the same format as D70 and D100 raw files

I am not talking about capacity or file size

the PSD device mentioned will be good enough wont be extremely fast but I don't need that I am used to usb 1.0 transfer rates i get from the apple ibook
and the screen preview isn't that important it's just a nice bonus, I wil not be zooming or inspecting the images on the PSD just need to dump and se what has been dumped

If compressing your RAW files with the d2x does this effect image quality, also my display still reads 98 shots left after i change it to Raw Compression

I read that unless you overprocess the compressed image, it is very hard to notice the degradation in quality.

Thanks Huynhie in the d2x guide page 48 NEF images reduced by 40-50% with almost no effect in quality,

Hey bbj

we talked about this x drive thing many times before, just investigating all options.

miteado

the effects in raw compression are negligable, my d2x also does not display full amount of available shots when i turn raw cpmpression on

from memory I can get 97 images on a 2gig cf card

Ted's have them for $799 at the moment and you can get them from another web-retailer for $719... I've asked Birdy for a quote on one, but haven't heard the price yet...

Like to get it for you leek! but there's the new version with 80Gb is on its way at the same price, why should you bother with 40Gb P-2000 :?:
If you're in rush then get it first, sorry.

I owe you an apology, it is actually 198 on a 4GB CF Card shooting 'RAW' with compression 'OFF'

Must get some new glasses.

Well that's pretty good leighton. I generally now don't fill anymore than 1.5 x 512mb compact flash cards with D70 raws (~130 images) in about 3-4hours. It really depends on what sort of action there is. If you find you're filling two 4gb cards in a day you should be asking yourself. Do I really need to take the same shot twice.

I didn't mean to be critical Birddog... I'm patiently waiting for the quote... :-) :-)

When is the new version coming out? I will need something for our upcoming UK trip mid-December...

People

Just got word back from Vosonic that the X Drive VP6230 multimedia viewer
supports Nikon D2X RAW files, that means it can read them and display them on the tiny screen. Woohoo!

Funny thing is they were sooo helpful they wanted me to send them a Nikon D2X raw file, they said they woudl work on it non stop to try and see if the firmware on the device would preview the Raw file, so i went through my fashion photos thinking being men they would enjoy a beautiful pic of a lovely female in gorgeous 12Megapixel resolution, but instead gave them a really hunky spunky guy with hungry eyes, i though it would be funny if the tech heads worked really hard at cracking the RAW file and finally booo!, darn it's a man with hungry eyes! ha ha ha.
