Think my D70 metering is dead???????

Pulled my D70 out of its bag today for the first time since xmas, hooked up my 70-200 with a 1.7tc, using shutter speed priority which was set to 1/500, apeture was reading F4.8, and the meter was way off to the right into the negative (as you can see in the attached photo, which i took of my monitor through the viewfinder with another camera)



Thought this was a little strange in broad day light to be reading 4.8, usually its up in the double figures when i use that sort of speed.

Anybody got any suggestions or tips?

Also bare in mind it took a pity hard hit on a road at the end of November, when it was in my hand as i stacked it on the side of the road, but it has been working fine since.

When did you buy your camera?

Usually when the metering is going all over the place or not working correctly, it's a sign that the dreaded BGLOD is about to hit it.

I bought it back in April 2004, funnily enough the same day I got knocked out playing footy.

I did buy it here in Adelaide, but at Harvey Normans and i lashed out on the extended warranty, so fingers crossed

its seems a lot of people that have the problem are getting it fixed free of charge out of warranty.

April 2004 is in the time period, from what I remember, where the BGLOD is likely to affect someone.

Luckilly for you, Maxwell seem to have no problem with people who are out of warranty regarding the BGLOD.

Free of charge, last I recall.

dropped my D70 off today at Adelaide Technical Camera Service and the guy said that the problem should be fixed for free out of warranty, but it will take 3 to 4 weeks.

Take the TC off and check the meter. At ISO 200 on a sunny day the meter should indicate SP 1/250 @ F16...or thereabouts when pointed at green grass. If it indicates within a stop or so then I'd say the meter is OK and the connection with the TC is dodgy.

i did that when i first noticed it and set the camera to aperture priority and wound it back to 2.8, shutter speed was reading between 1.5secs to 1/3secs.

anyways its being sent to maxwells to get fixed,

pity it didnt last another 2 months for when i was planning on getting a d200
