Was just wondering where Nikon is with the banding and other issues with the D200, or should I probably wait for the D200S?

But somehow not much seems to have been made out of the similar issue with Canon. Maybe Canon dealt with the bad publicity better.

The banding issue in my opinion was blown out of proportion. Nikon did handle it badly with a poorly worded press release that caused internet meltdown.

Most of the comments I read about D200 banding occur at the border of a bright light source with a shadow.

The link you show indicates that for the 5D banding occurs in the shadow regions.

I think the D200 banding would be more noticable because of where it occurs when compared with the 5D. But it may be restricted to early batches of the camera.

Now it may not be the case with the later shipments.

if you haven't got one already you won't getting one with banding probs. Nikon have sorted it, not before time

From what I have read, the 'gross' banding problem (type 2 / 3) appeared to be a QC issue with one of their production lines.

However, it also appears that the VERY slight banding people occasionally see around high contrast areas (eg Type1 - edge of a lightbulb on a dark background and similar scenes) are considered by Nikon to be within spec and wont be fixed.

Having said the above, a number of people who have had their cameras fixed for Type2/3 also say that they havent seen any Type1 since either.

The current grumbles around the net seem to be more focused on distribution, look and quantity of high ISO noise. Interestingly, a lot of people who seem to be experiencing the worst problems are using Sigma lenses (this is my own observation) and are using a RAW developer OTHER than NC.

A friend of mine with a D200 had type 1 banding (the short banding around blown highlights which shows up at ISO 400 - 800). He sent it in to Nikon for banding fix and the type 1 banding can't be seen now, so he's happy.

I think Nikon worded their press release regarding the banding the way they did to protect themselves. With pretty much any digital camera, you can force some sort of banding out of it in extreme situations.

So if Nikon worded their banding response as saying that banding will be totally gone after the fix and then you get people doing extreme stuff to the camera to induce banding, they'll have more problems. I think they worded it poorly, but they didn't want to say that it will be totally removed.

For the updated infos which I've just known.
Banding type 1/2/3 are still with some of Nikon D200s, hasn't fixed or removed or rectified as Nikon announced. It's at high ISO level.

There's an "s" in the past years and will be an "s" for the near future.
