Hi Guys and Gals,

I might be able to get a used Nikon D1H(Body only with 20k shots)cheap and as funny as this may seem, a backup for my D70. Just wanted to know the good and bad about this camera. Should i even get it. I know it's heavy too. I'll be using it for sports and concerts mostly. Thanks in advance.

It's what... 2 megapixel?

That could be the bad right there.

The D1H is a good camera for the time it was released.

Struggling with 2MP is another thing for you to think about once you had the 6mp on your hand for awhile.

If you just shoot it for any news agency or any paper, they do not require a high resolution, it's OK, mainly in Jpeg. Then go for it.

2mp is too narrow and not giving you many chances of cropping if you want to, especially when you plan to shoot sport with it.

The D1H is not faster in AF as your current D70.

The D1H battery is suck, heavy, not much of juice and expensive.

If it's at the level of less than 400 bucks, then get and hang it around your neck with other cameras and became a Pro Shooter (As someone on this board planned to do it before  ).

It's now as one of the collectible items of the Nikon Golden Hours.

My work uses d1h's and they a fairly decent sized newspaper, they need to get on with the times I think.

If it were a D1x that you found for cheap I'd maybe consider that but the H is just a little outdated, but if you really want it then go for it!

I don't think they quite get it here in toowoomba, I still get asked if im using film even when im chimping :S

So I reckon you could glue a large black cardboard tube to a kodak disposable camera and get away with it here.

2MP is not so bad, especially if you are only viewing on-screen, or on newspaper. It'll print out a very nice 4x6, and a "decent" 8x10... but it really doesn't leave you much cropping room.

I don't think the image size is as much of an issue as the handling, speed, battery etc issues.

How would you respond to that?

"Oh yeah... I shoot on E6 and my camera's back gets loaded with chemicals & automatically develops the film for me..."

Thanks to all who replied. I was considering it because of the price $400.00. I'm an amatuer and just wanted to get my hands on a pro camera. Do you guys still say it's not worth it. I see threads people still use the D1H for newspapers and sports, etc.

I mentioned ealier on this thread, if it's under $500.00, and it's AU$500.00
I didn't check your location, you're in the US and US$400.00 is not my choice.

How many of you have actually used a D1H? its an excellent camera and will produce absolutely awesome pics (composition aside) and you can print as large at A3. Obviously it doesnt leave as much room to crop but if your shooting with a sharp lens and a half decent photographer then you will have no problems.

I sold off all my camera gear (20D, 1D etc) cos i thought it wasnt worth having the $3-4k of gear around when all i really need is a cheap body and a 50mm prime and im happy and i used the D1H for ages. The body itself was much better to use than the 20D and the pictures were fine even on my 23" HD LCD. Obviosly the 20D had much bette picture quality but for the way i view most of my pics = apple 23" LCD / plasma and the occasional a3'ish sized print it was no problem. That and the fact that it was like $400 2nd hand made me think twice about keeping a $1500 canon body.

So yeh.. i would take it in an instant if its less than $500. Its excellent tool to use adn it produces unbelievably sharp /details pics for 2.7MP. no need to spend all that cash on a DSLR unless your into tech specs or making money from it. PS: they still fetch some good $$'s so if you buy for sub $500 u can still get $700 for them. So if you dont like it u wont lose cash (but if D50 price comes down that might change).
