Flash Problems

When I'm in aperture mode with my SB800 mounted on the camera (D70s), no matter what I set the aperture to, the shutter speed seems to stay on 1/60. Why is this? It's really frustrating. Am I just being stupid?

That's Just How It Is :) You can't go lower than 1/60 unless you use slow sync.

Though you can set that minimum amount in the menus (can't remember exactly which one)

not sure on the d70s
but on the d2x there is a csm menu that allows you to choose the flash shutter sync

but on my camera even if i get the flash shutter sync right i still get that problem I haven't worked it out yet and always shoot in manual with flash

That's the default shutter speed for flash on the D70 as well.
In order to change it you need slow sync like Des said. I didn't know you could custom set that value - will have a plough through the menus tonight.

Yeah, you can definitely set that value (at least on the D70s, not 100% about the D70) - I had it at 1/30 for a while. But as wendell said, it's sometimes better to go to manual for full control when using the flash.

I'm not bothered about making it slower. I want the shutter speed to be faster. Is this not possible either?

Off the top oif my head I can't think if the shutter speed changes in A mode with the flash attached.

I always use Manual mode with the flash which gets me syncing up to 1/500th so it's completely possible to go faster, just not too sure about the A mode mate.

If the shutter speed is most important, use S-mode. If the aperture is most important, use A-mode. If they are as important as each other, use M ;)

I think you'll find the camera just figures you want 1/60th if you're using the flash. There are ways around it - most effective way is to use the above rule :) (IMHO)
