Quick question about kit lenses in partic Nikkor 18-70mm I got with my D80. Should it have come with a soft lens case/bag? It didnt , but everythign I read is that it should have - do all new Nikkor lenses come with soft cases? I wouldn't worry but i would like to have it fo rwhen it isnt on the camera...

Mine didn't, and it came in a separate box.

Neither did my 50 f/1.4, nor my 24-120VR.

Most lenses don;t come with a xase, but for most, one is available.

As a guide, they're mostly a waste of money - if you have a good bag, that will afford all of the protection your lenses need, and you won't be spending time removing the lens from its case when you should be making images.

In years gond by Nikon cameras used to come with what was quaintly called an "everready" case. Experience soon ensured that therse were more accurately referred to as "Never-ready" cases.

Older lenses comes with a more 'collectable' hard case. Like the 80-200, 17-35 or AF 300 f/4 (not the AFS). They are very impractical, but good collectable items IMO.

Newer ones now come with 'soft cases' which is also impractical, and much less value as collectable items.

My 18-70 came in separate lens box, it did have a soft pouch, but I've lost it already.

Many lenses I bought didnt come with any case at all. Even of a $1k+ lens, no pouch/case at all.. Uhh, I'd like it to have a hard leather case, but I dont really care as all my lens cases are here to store some other smaller household items...

I agree with Gary, a good bag will be many times better than idependent lens case!


I know the Sigma lens cases are very cool, they are zipper locked and provides some room for small household items, but can be carried on-field like a belt accessory on the bag.

When I bought my D70 kit, the 18-70 came in a separate box, with a soft bag.

I use the bag for a ball head these days.

juz fyi, d80 kit w 18-135 lens does come with soft case pouch. i sold the lens without checking the box so now my 50 prime has its own pouch... hehe

when i got my D70s kit, the 18-70DX was inside the box next to the body.
it also came with its own soft pouch
its actually a pretty nice pouch- good soft feel, but isnt too protective at all.
these days it holds either the box of spare AA batteries or spare change

thanks guys, Teds are going to send me one which was nice of them - I may not use it for the lens, but if it is supposed to come with the lens, I want it gimme gimme gimme!

EDIT: Arrived yesterday to the credit of Teds...

My D70s came in a kit (same box) with this lens and it came with a soft bag for the lens - pretty much useless if you have a bag so don't worry if you didn't get one.
