I shoot 80% in portrait mode, and wondering if the D200 can rotate the images based on camera orientation?

I notice that there is in the SETUP menu, > Auto Image Rotation (on and off). I cant seem to notice a difference with this setting, and it sounds like it sets a flag on the file.

So, what software reads this flag?

I use the simple windows picture viewer, but perhaps I should be using nikon picture project??

There's a similar setting in the D70 - perhaps even two - that turn on the image rotate feature.

As a viewer, download NikonView from the Nikon Asia site. you may need a valid Oz serial number for that, but that can be from pretty well and Oz sourced Nikon camera. Please let us know if you experience any problems.

NV also comes with a lobotomised version of NCE, but even though it's lobotomised, it still provides a pretty good range of features to give you some better than basic raw file editing features.

oh, whoops. I see that picture project uses the flag, and rotates the images.

I had not been using the project software, as I thought it created duplicates of files...

Very annoying feature IMO. Nikon software recognises the tags, and opening a vertical image in Capture or Nikon View it's the right way up. But when browsing in Windows, with the thumbnails or image preview, it's screwed up.

I use picture project to import photos from my D50. For a period it stopped rotating the portrait pics automatically. It would then give me the irits because some programs would rotate the photos (Picassa ... I think), whereas Windows default viewer would not. So you rotate the photos in Windoze Picture Viewer, and they would be stuffed in the previous set.

I found there is a tickbox that can be set in Picture Project, that had somehow become unticked. On the transfer screen, Click options, and then tick the box that says automatically rotate files ...

Even so, programs like Bibble do not seem to take notice of the Rotation ... maybe I am missing something.

if the D50, is similar to the D200, you have to set the flag in the camera also.

The D50 has a Rotate Tall option in the menu that is ON. Photos displayed in Playback are rotated. Everywhere on PC, except Bibble seems to rotate correctly now for me ...
