Nikon DSLR Rumours for PMA '07

Well I am sure that most of you already peruse the forums at dpreview.com so this will potentially be old news.

The 'heated' rumour of the moment is that Nikon will announce one new DSLR at PMA. This is expected to be a D40x (yes 'x' not 's') they are also saying it will sport a 10.2Mp sensor akin to that on the D80.

Cheers
Brett

Let's look at this sensibly ...

Nikon have traditionally, only made one announcement of new stuff fo shows, be that PMA, Photokina, whatever. They've already announced a swag od PHDs, so that takes care of that.

Let's look now at the camera, the D40, which is the hottest DSLR in Japan (according to some sales info that I've seen) and seems to doing pretty well elsewhere. The model is just 3 months old; why would they replace it?

Some of the talk suggests that Sony is discontinuing the 6MP chip ... hmmm ... that means that the Pentax 6MP cameras, as well as the D70s, are also dead.

None of which considers that Nikon probably have some sort of a contract with Sony for the supply of the sensors, and given expected production runs, set up of supply chains and production facilities etc, the discontinuance of a chip would not be a trivial issue.

From Sony's PoV, the 6MP would be a high profit item too - all of the R&D costs would be fully amortised, so every one sold is basically just cream.

Then we get to the measurbators ... who just love rumours.

I'm putting this one into the "I'll believe it when I see it" box.

The two best news items have been released - Canon and Fuji - stuff Nikon (a bit like the British Empire - they have had their heyday) 8)

Still no FF announcements :?

I've been saying for years that Nikon & Fuji need to come together and make the equipment together.

That said, I'm not too impressed that the S5 is still a 12-down-to-6 mp camera. I'd think even with all the improvements to the sensor, megapixel size would have been on the list.

I imagine that the next camera that Nikon should announce would be a D3 model only because they've got nothing to compete (now) with the new Canon announcements as their D2h/hs are practically dead in the water.

Some hearsay - I met a professional photographer (shooting OZ shots for a calendar - using film) from Germany whilst I was on holidays - last week.
He (Ingol or spelt something like that) said he lives just down the road from what he termed the Nikon Professional department or service centre.
Said he went to a meet organised by the people at Nikon Professional (Germany) and they were suggesting a Nikon FF DSLR would be on the market in their mid-summer (he said they were expecting a release around end of June).

...and we keep dreaming - not holding our breath :)

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

Hey I'm not a measurbator, I'm just a rumour mongerer :)

And anyway I have put my money where my mouth is and ordered my new camera anyway, regardless of what may or may not be announced at PMA ;)

Personally I would think that only a small DSLR would be announced if one was to be announced. They are not about to try and compete with Canon's announcements are they. If they are going to go with a FF or 1.13 sensor (what ever the latest rumour is) then I think it won't be until later in this year, or even early next year, but that is just my thoughts.

Wooohooo.....great announcement 'NOT' Nikon  .......keep running cause the ball is long gone. :?

How much of a ride are they taking us all for (high end Nikon users). Its a joke, and its going to bite them on the behind bigtime. 2 months ago i was passionately arguing for Nikon about everything (even the attrocious noise)....now i couldn’t be bothered.

To quote a line out of the Sopranos "Nikons dead to me”!

I was just reading ProPhoto magazine today and they said that Sony will be planning to phase out the older sensors and continue down the track with 10MP sensors at DX size.

Whereas rumour states that since Sony (actually KM) have recently launched a new line of glasses at different focal length and spec, mainly all of them are revised version of KM lenses. Fortunately enough, they are all 35mm based lenses on the pro level lenses, and even yet the lower end lenses. As it seems like Sony is going to hit the market hard on an announcement of their first pro-level DSLR at FF format.

Their prediction is that Nikon will follow suit after Sony's development of their new FF format soon enough.

I'm expecting this to be early 2008 to be happening...

And that D40 upgrade, that doesn't sound right for Nikon, they dont upgrade their stuff until some 18 months after the first release. Or they are playing a new game of trick here this time??

Isn't that the date when Apple, traditionally, make their new product announcements?

I know too that it's when Computer Associates move all of their staff around into new roles.
