Nikon 10 pin connector - how to blow your dough

Doing plenty of research on the Nikon 10 pin connector...
Building a project.
It seems that there are either two different pin numbering configurations for the 10 pin connector, or one of these is wrong...
The first -

You will note that pins 1 to 8 go anticlockwise on the camera body and clockwise on the cable...

Spot the difference?
While I am posting links to data cables and pin outs,

So I have studied the circuit and detirmined that the plug does the same thing, just that they have numbered it differently...
My justification for this is that if you look at this circuit as taken from here, you will note that if you follow pins 1 and 2, they correlate to the descriptions given in the table on this page and the table on this page.
That is, pin 1 is data receive, and pin 2 is battery voltage... (Though it is interesting that he uses battery voltage from pin 2 for his circuit instead of regulated +5 volts as available on pin 3...)
However, if you follow the circuit pin 5 matches data transmit, which correlates to pin 8 from the other tables...
And pin 7 in the diagram is used as signal ground, which matches pin 6 in the other tables.
Again, it is interesting to see he is using signal ground in the circuit instead of power ground for his chip.
I had a look at the data sheet of his chip and it does require +5v (here, page 17) I do not know the logic behind the use of signal ground instead of power ground, nor do I understand the use of battery voltage instead of regulated +5 volts as the chip needs... But if it works for him, that's great.
I just thought I should bring these anomolies to the attention of us all so we can proceed cautiously if building projects using the Nikon 10 pin connector.
So, what am I building?
