Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 D

Can anyone fill me in on differences between the push - pull version and the rotary version of this lens.

I kmow the AF-S is the rotary version, did the AF-D come out in both or does the push - pull version precede the AF-D.

Push pull and rotary IIRC are both similar optically, only the rotary "two touch" has a tripod collar mount. I recently sold a push-pull, and neglected to remember whether it was AF-D or not. IMHO distance information relating to exposure metering (the 'D') is so miniscule I doubt it would make a noticeable difference in the way the camera calculates exposure.

The push-pull version was updated to create a two-ring version (AF-D). An AF-S version was released after that, but it is no longer sold. The push-pull version is slow to auto-focus. I understand that the updated two-ring version (AF-D) is geared to be quite fast.

Thom Hogan has a 70-200VR review that lists the 80-200 lens versions that preceded it.

Personally, I'd be looking at either the current 80-200 or 70-200 lens instead of the push-pull version. (I am ).

According to Rockwell, there are 2 versions of the 1 touch (aka push pull), the earlier AF and an updated AF-D (#2 and #3 under his labelling).

So yes, AF-D came out in both versions.

xorl's ambiguous use of two ring = AF-D can be misleading. While the two-ring versions are AF-D, it is not necesarily true that all AF-D are two-ringed.

also i have heard the push pull versions are dust vaccums, id recommend the rotary

I ahve the push pull version..It is an AF Nikkor 80-200 1:2.8 D ED.
If that helps .There is an even earlier non D model. For the price grab a two touch newer one or a Sigma 70-200..
