Found this clever little idea for a cheap flash bracket for the 70-200VR.

I can't read a single word of chinese, but the pictures speak for themselves.

The synch cord they used isn't cheap (> $100 at D-D). However, it should be possible to achieve the same result by using the on-camera flash to trigger the SB-600/800 wirelessly. To mount the flash to the tripod collar, we can use the stand that comes with the SB-600/800 (via some sort of standard 3/8" thread adapter).

I haven't tried it myself because I'm not sure how useful a flash would be in situations where you need the range of a 70-200. Nevertheless, I thought it was a pretty clever idea.

does the 18-200 have a collar mount?
i could see it being handy on the 18-200 not the 70-200.

What makes this work on the 70-200VR is that the tripod collar rotates. This keeps the flash in the same position to the lens regardless of whether the camera is in landscape or portrait orientation (which is why you would want to use a flash bracket in the first place).

Apart from the 70-200VR, I don't think there's another lens in the Nikon range that have this feature.

Indeed there is! My mind is a bit jumbled up at the moment. I was thinking of the quick release mechanism on the tripod collar.

I think the light would work its way around it, and the SB800 has the same sensors on its front, so I think they would work together.

nice idea. Just use a long screw that Hama make (can get it in an $8 bracket), remove the 1/4" thread reducer, and there you are!

the 80-200 (non VR), the 80-400 VR, and any other one with a tripod collar (some primes, 200mm F2, 300 f2.8, 200-400, etc)

But yes, not avaialble on non telephoto generally, as the tripod bracket would use the camera (its essentially long, heavyier lenses).
