In all the excitement about the D3 and D300, Nikon ViewNX somewhat got lost in there. Nikon ViewNX replaces Nikon View Pro. Click here for NikonUSA info on it.

The software will be available with the D3 and the D300. It will also be available as a free download

That's very interesting André since earlier today I went searching for Nikon View Pro and couldn't find any trace of it bar press releases and previews from a year ago. As best I could tell Nikon View Pro never made it to market. Lets hope this rebadged version does.

that's correct I think, Nikon View Pro didn't make it to market due to various problem it had. It was shown at various major shows but in the end, I think Nikon decided to cut their losses.

I also hope to see Nikon ViewNX as it looks promising in terms of speed and integration in some of the various workflows.

Yep, there was an announcement from Nikon several months ago that Nikon View Pro will be cancelled. Looks like ViewNX is the replacement - and good that it will be provided free.

Tokyo – Nikon Corporation has made the difficult decision to cancel the release of high-speed image management and browsing software, Nikon View Pro, the launch of which had been announced on February 21, 2006.

Despite our preparations to release the software on schedule, the environment surrounding image handling is undergoing major changes. Although there hasn't been much discussion here about it...Ninon Capture NX is one of the finest NEF processing programs available. Nothing comes close to the fidelity of the processed image as this program....even if it is a bit convoluted to use.

Absolutely agree and the current version (1.2) is a great improvement on speed of processing. Having tried a number of RAW converters, I must admit that this one gives me the best results yet!

Is there a upgrade path from Nikon Capture 4 to Nikon Capture NX? I have the former and am interested in the latter.

Can both versions run on the same computer at the same time?

EDIT: I should have checked the Knowledge Database:

It is not recommended to install both Nikon Capture and Capture NX on the same computer as this may cause unexpected issues to occur

Actually, even though it says that.. I'm running both Capture 4.4 and Capture NX on my machine right now, so yeah, it works fine.

I've had a play with Capture NX and I like it. Does anyone know of a legitimate site where I can purchase the software license on-line (i.e. so I don't have to buy the packaged product)? I don't need the manuals or CD.

I've had a quick play with Nikon ViewNX and while it is nice, I don't think it will fit with my workflow.

The main problem I have is that most of the operations must be done in the thumbnail view. With Nikon View, you pretty much could do the same operations in the thumbnail view as you could in the viewer. My normal workflow is to step through each image in the viewer and when I'm happy with one I load PSP 9 (or more recently CaptureNX) straight from the viewer. With ViewNX it appears I have to close the viewer once I have decided on an image.

The other problem I have is that while you can adjust some of the settings (white balance, exposure) you can only do it in the thumbnail view and you have to save to the NEF.

I'll keep playing, but I don't think my mind will be changed in a hurry.

I'm getting weird results from the Lost Highlights function.

Here is a screen capture of a raw image in ViewNX:

Here is what it shows as the lost highlights:

Here is what CaptureNX shows for the lost highlights for the exact same image:

Also note that after a small amount of adjustment to an image in CaptureNX, memory usage skyrockets. At one point it was using well over 500MB of memory.

i love it but only as a viewer. export to NX is cool too. i wouldn;t bother using it for any editing.

I just installed the new Nikon Transfer tool. A number of benefits over the previous version is thumbnails of all the images on the memory card before transfer (when you are really impatient) and the ability to copy to 2 locations so it automatically does your back up.
