A friend of mine has given me an old Nikon coolpix 5700 and asked if I could find out whether its worth fixing or not.

The camera turns on fine, lens zooms in and out no worries. I can flick through the menu and change settings with no hassles. Was able to reformat the card etc.

But there is a funny clicking noise going on inside and there is no image showing on either the little lcd screen or through the viewfinder.

And if you press the shutter button, a red dot flashes with the capital letters SB next to it.

He's ok if the camera is going to be thrown away, but I thought it wouldnt hurt to ask first.

There are a couple of issues with the 5700/8700 that can be easily fixed.

Google the camera, and see what shows up.

If your totally buggered on it, I have a couple 5700's sitting in the cupboard with bugger all use on them I would be possibly looking at parting with if it helps out.
God even knows what they are worth nowadays!

There was also a product recall/free repair for it too, but what you have is not one of the symptoms

The SB red dot is the camera showing that it's charging the flash.

Since you state you were able to format the card, I assume you can see the camera menus. This points to fault in the sensor. see if you can copy a photo to the card on our pc and put the card back in the camera, you should be able to review the image in the viewfinder and LCD. IF so.... it's the sensor.
There is a Nikon Service note for the issue with the malfunctioning sensor. Camera Clinic in Melbourne fixed mine for a mere $20 handling fee, I don't know who your local Nikon Authorized service centre is but you should be able to find out by contacting Nikon or your favorite Nikon retailer.
