Was wondering what the opinion is on the Nikon 2x TC
or should i go no higher than the 1.7 TC ??
I am having trouble with not enough length on bird wildlife shots around Port Vincent
Also want more length for the Air defence show @ the end of the month

I can only repeat the opinion of others (eg Thom Hogan) who reckon that you shouldn't bother with anything more than the TC-17E II.
He says that there is loss of sharpness above that.

I have only tried the 1.7x on mine, and to be honest, it is just about on the limit of acceptable, provided you stop down. All reports I've read indicate the 2x is even softer, and I personally wouldn't go there.

Hi Warren,
many many many and many more opinions express:
do not go beyond the TC17EII
I have a TC17EII and have combined it with a 70-200m VR and I am very pleased with the results.
Going beyond the TC17EII into 2X territory will most likely dissapoint because the results WILL be too soft as EVERYONE says.
HTH and cheers,
CD

PS: You and me both. The 1.7x gives you a bit of extra length that is useful, but I think there's a 200-400 somewhere in my future, either that or a 300/2.8... mmmmmmm

Warren - do not go beyond the TC-17EII.
You can borrow mine at the Mini Meet - RAAF Defence Air Show on the 28th October, 2007 for try out.

I have the 70-200VR + TC-20EII combo. There is a loss of sharpness although I dont ahave a 1.7x to compare it to. I think there's also a slight loss of contrast.
Overall I'm happy with the 2x but would probably go for the 1.7x next time round.
I did a quick little test of the 70-200 + tc-20eii combo ages ago.

The 70-200 and the 1.7x is a good marriage. Best not annoy it.
