Funny, we just spoke about that (using DX lenses in FX mode on the D3) the other day...

The lens mod done to the 10.5 would suggest he knows that the D3's auto-selection of DX format with DX lenses *can* be overridden...

He achieved a very smooth almost factory looking finish hacking away at the lens hood protrusion bits there.
