CaptureNX - Getting up to speed

Hi,

I've recently been getting up to speed on CaptureNX. CaptureNX has a user interface that is different then a lot of other software that I was used to. Some people really hate the user interface but the ones that actually have spent the time to learn how the program works can get some really good results from their Nikon raw files.

CaptureNX is not for everybody. It certainly isn't the fastest raw converter around but with CaptureNX being bundled with the D3/300, more people may want to try it out.

Nikon publish a series of How To guides for CaptureNX. You can find them on the NikonUSA site here. There are 32 different how to to get you started.

On the CaptureNX web site, http://www.capturenx.com/, you will find movies, tech tips and tech guides. Just go to the Tutorials section.

A good ebook to get you started is "The Photographer's Guide to Capture NX" by Jason Odell. It is reasonably priced and will get you started quickly. I have this one and find it very useful.

A more extensive tutorial is Vincent Versace's three DVD tutorial. It can be found at: http://acmeeducational.com/versace/nx.html. I have heard lots of good thing about this one. Note that it is based on Version 1.2 so you may want to wait a bit to see if he will have a new release to cover the changes in Version 1.3. I haven't seen or used these DVD's, just heard some really good things about them.

I have been using CaptureNX with my D70 since September when I a) decided I was going to get a D300 and b) realised that I wouldn't be able to read the D300 NEFs with PaintShopPro 9.

I love it and find it very easy to use. It does everything I want it to do with a couple of exceptions, but I can do them in PSP9 anyway. I don't like the way when you crop, it doesn't tell you what the resulting dimensions will be. I also haven't go my head around the USM, but that's not a big deal as I USM after I have cropped and I'm cropping in PSP9.
