the D3 - the 24-70 - and me

Yes we're getting very close - that is, me and my new kit.
Went for a walk down the strip tonight to try auto ISO ( set a ceiling ISO with auto, a fixed aperture and a minimum floor shutter speed )
Here are some results:-
Semos Morrocan Restaurant - f2.8 : 1/60s : ISO2500 : 58mm
Gelatisimo - f2.8 : 1/250s : ISO800 : 24mm
Klingers Menswear - f2.8 : 1/60s : ISO2800 : 24mm
Zink Bar - f2.8 : 1/30s : ISO6400 : 56mm

I like the idea of a truly usable auto ISO. That feature will be fantastic for sports photographs and the like.

What are you thoughts on the 24-70 ??? I'm still deciding between the 28 and 24 to 70. So the more feedback the better! I'd love a D3 too, but maybe next year.

Craig,
I sold - 10.5 fiseye, 12-24 dx, 17-35, and 28-70 (all nikon)
I bought - 14-24 and 24-70 to replace above for the D3
The 17-35 and 28-70 were outstanding lenses but in my opinion, and others more qualified, the newer lenses are at another level.
The 24-70 is a G Type lens so if that doesn't bother you I'd go the 24-70 - I think it's cheaper anyway

So you don't have any qualms about the build quality of the 24-70 (on all accounts the glass is great, but "it looks cheaper") I've yet to hold one so I don't know.

Because it's a G lens it is not as bulky - but it's not like a cheap plastic lens - definately a pro lens

Bobs 24-70 is a lot lighter and less bulky than my 28-70, and it does have the convex front lens which will call for you to be very careful. From a very short play with it though it is certainly sharp, as of course is the beast.

The lens is -tack- sharp, one just needs to know how to use it
I've been using shots straight out of the camera without any sharpening added. Here's an example (sorry for the hijack!).. no sharpening applied at all (and none in camera either).

Nice shot and sharp as a tack. It is an exceptional zoom with the quality of a good prime lens
This shot was taken at 3200 iso and whilst it has a narrow DOF and was focused on the bridge of his nose and toward the right eye it does show the sharpness in his moustache.
