Oh, good, just at a time when I have not two pennies to rub together...

My guess was going to $6600, which when you think about it is a pretty good price for a top of the line pro body camera.

Anyone have $6600 they want to waste on a MS photographer?

Maybe they do, too.

But given that these are like hens' teeth and not yet commonly available .... one has to wonder.

Regardless, Poon is giving us first dibbs on this one .. if someone here wants it for $6300 tonight, then great, please let me know. Otherwise this goes onto eBay.

Or maybe it becomes Poon's ... he's already told me the he loves it. :)

Just for interest's sake, I rang Nikon on Broadway yesterday and asked what was their situation with the D3, which is as follows:

Price: $6459.00 (which was lower than I thought they would charge)
Availability: Expected to be no sooner than end of January, but they couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't get one in before.

So, while Nikon on Broadway's price was lower than I expected, Poon's is excellent (which is no surprise, of course!)

Chris, it would be worth asking about picking up from northern beaches. Ask them when ... :) I'd be curious to see if they really have them.

John,

Yes, it's the first one he's received, and he tells me that he's the only dealer in HK with stocks of the D3 (one only, now sold, so he actually has zero stock now as well) and he is getting regular shipments of D300s to the point where he has told me that D300 stock is not, at this time, an issue.

With that sort of availability, the price is, I think, meaningless.

We all know, for instance that at some point the D300 price will drop below PP2K. So, while this will most certainly happen, how long are you prepared to wait for it?

Sorry ... and I'm not meaning to dis anyone either; just trying to put this price into perspective. Maybe January, maybe February, but nobody knows for sure.

Does it matter?

This is the first of these that he has received, and he has chosen to make it available to our members (or one of them, at any rate) at a price significantly less than what he might otherwise be able to sell it for.

Given that every single one of these bodies is just walking out the doors of the stores that are selling them, regardless of the pricing, I think that, all things told, we don't do too badly at all.

Gary, I totally agree. Poon and you are legends in being able to get the gear we want here so quick and at such great prices. I think forum members got about 50% of Poon's first shipment of D300s and now I get his entire first shipment of D3. I am very comfortable sending my money thru this forum to Poon. A lot more comfortable than some other means of buying gear. I am one very happy customer and I truly thank you and Poon.

Regards
John

Chris,

I take your point that there are certainly other options for those who want to have this camera now.

My point though goes beyond that however.

The fact is that Poon's price to us could have been significantly more than it was: he could have chosen to sell this item through his eBay shop at something much closer to the true current market price for this body.

Instead, he gave us first denial on this, and at a reduced profit to himself. We were able to find a willing buyer, and soon John will have a D3 in his hands at a reasonable saving (compared with current market) and through a dealer whom we know well, and trust.

I'm not saying the other vendors are less reputable, but in this instance we are dealing with people we know, and at the same time we're getting the best possible price - as evidenced by your own postings - and we know the level of service.
