Nikon D3 versus some beach rocks...

OK not a nice day.. I went out to shoot a sunset as there was little else to do.
The tripod fell over as one leg was a bit shorter than the other two (DOH)... and the D3 landed about 1m below onto rocks. Cracked the top... everything works except that the thumb control dial doesnt spin anymore. Will need to get it fixed.
The only plus is that I've ordered another D3 to use whilst this is getting repaired (not sure if they will have parts!) ...
Was it worth it?!! ..no

What a way to spoil a day. That is sad news, and not a good way to test a new camera. I wonder how long a repair like this will take, given it's so new.

methd,
I had a similar thing happen to a D70s about a year ago. It was a really sick feeling when I heard the sound of the camera hitting the rocks.
Good luck on the repairs.
cheers,
André

Oh sweet jesus h christ!!!
I guess theres the advantage of a D3 (or any pro body) over the up market prosumer bodies.
Hope you get it repaired soon mate.

I decided to rip the broken bit off with a little screwdriver. After doing that, the secondary dial spins again, as the metal cover was putting pressure on the dial. Everything is working good now and I can use the camera for a shoot tonight. Amazing how strong it is.. if it had been my D200, I think it would have shattered apart.
The lens hit on the hood as you can see, it would have to have been the second impact as the camera took the first one. Lucky it didn't hit the glass, and everything is working perfect there too !

Won't that let the light in and spoil the fillum?
I had to make a joke to stop myself from crying. Goodness knows how you must feel.
Glad it wasn't totalled, anyway.

At least people will think that you are a pro tog.
They are the ones with tape and dings on their gear, while amateurs have shiny unblemished cameras and lenses.

I suppose on the upside, no-one is going to steal your camera because it looks like its been a brawl

Does it feel comfy with the velcro?? wouldnt it be better to use just the 'soft' side of the velcro for taping it up?

Woah! <wince>
Still... it must be nice to know a D3 can survive that kind of punishment.

Ouch, nasty...
Off topic wise though, all the people that came to collect their D3s are "older gentlemen".

Glad I saw this after I went to take pics of the sunrise of the rocks this morning. Hmmm should always hold camera on tripod but I know I never do.
Cheers

And I assume Mark Latham was nowhere to be seen.
Nasty crash but tough camera. They build 'em so they can survive.

It actually brings a smile to my face to see photo gear being used the way it was designed. What's sad and wince inducing would be the meticulously cared for with new body smell 3 yr old cameras that haven't seen sunlight.
WD Methd, you may have been the first D3 owner to have sufferred battle scars. The bit that broke is unsurprisingly plastic, not metal. You can tell by the white underneath of the bit you screwdrivered off.

Reminds of bygone days when I used to buy black nail polish to touch up camera scratches...

then again if it was something like a plasic body D70.....you would have lotsa bits to play with over only a crack!
there should be a forum for
