80-200 f/2.8 onto D300 Kinda being weird Help!

Hi Guys,

So my dream lens (well one of them anyway) got delivered today and I love it. Bought it from a forum member who was really helpful and the lens is exactly as he said it was, perfect!

Now onto the slight issue. When I stuck it on the camera the D300 wasn't seeing the lens correctly. I'm not sure if that's the correct terminology but when the lens was set to 2.8 on the ring closest to the camera mount the LCD read out sadi f/EE. As in error I assume. At this time it was also having some trouble focussing as well.

Now when I set the lens to f/22 on the ring closest to the mount the LCD read out tells me it's at f/2.8! Now it autofocusses fine.

Strane? If I'm missing something obvious here please be gentle as I am very new to all of this and appreciate your patience.

Thanks in advance

Benny

WIth these cameras (D300/200/etc) and lenses such as that, you need to set the aperture to it's smallest setting (f/22) and use the sub-command dial to adjust the aperture.

Awesome, thanks. I was a little worried.

Not trying to be a smart arse but can I ask why? Just want to try and understand the workings of the beast.

Benny,

There are two common terms for this sort of thing.

The first one is RTFM, and the second is "Operator Error".

Let's go with the first one though: you're new here. :P Page 104 may be of use.

With most lenses, the D300 will meter electronically, and controlled from the body. In this instance the aperture ring serves a similar task to its less expensive cousin, the costume jewelery ring: it's mostly decorative.

Set the lens to F22, and leave it there. Fergedaboudit.

You then control the aperture setting (in A mode) from the body. On the D300, try using the front command dial. :)

Have fun. :)

If it is anything like the 50 1.4 (which has an aperture ring as well), you set the aperture to the minimum (f16 - 22 or whatever) and there is a locking switch. This then enables the computer in the camera to control the lens. These lenses are designed to work on the older Nikon SLR cameras (with no computer), so give an aperture ring to manually set the aperture (I Believe).

The newer Nikon "G" lenses do not have the aperture ring and would not work on older manual cameras.

Yeah very true. I will get around to it one of these days. Maybe at North Bondi Rissole with my mate Cooper(s)

Thanks Gary.

Nah .... that's going too far.

Well, sort of: The Burrito Bar just opposite the exit from QE2 Drive is worthy.

1 x margie.

1 plate of nachos.

Might even be worth a visit tonight if I can't be bothered cooking.

Burrito? Near the fire station?

Say when Gary. I'll bring my new toy.

Probably around half five or six-ish.

Don't yet know what time I'll finish here, but I'll probably go for a wander around Woolies in BJ and pick up a few essentials and then head down there for something.

A weight lifter.

2 margies.

1 plate of nachos

1 Taco salad.

And a partridge in a pear tree.

All consumed while watching the rain come down over the beach at North Bondi, followed by a quiet night at home.

That is so much food mate. So much.

I'm a 1 margie and Nachos kind of guy with maybe a cheeky beef taco thrown in for the walk home.

when using lens with aperture ring on a digital camera,

you have to set it to the smallest aperture, btw, which 80-200? is it af-s one?!
