Starforge, you can use the picture controls with NX, NX2 or ViewNX as well - so you can apply them to any NEF file from any Nikon camera.

Are these preset scene mode settings similar to those found on point & shoots?

Info can be found in your D300 manual, on p. 148.

Kind of like curves, that you can upload to the D70 etc., but with added stuff.
