Seriously i cannot believe this camera, all of a sudden my lenses appear to be MUCH sharper, i dont have to worry about what iso im using, unlike sticking under 800 on my d200 and the colours are AMAZING.

Cameras have come a LONG way in teh last 2 years.

I took a few shots at dinner with my mates tonight at ISO 3200, no grain, whitebalanced it looks like daylight.

Then i shot a gig and i have never had shots this sharp out of the camera, its unbelievable. and i love shooting everything at iso 3200!

I have never had my expectations smashed by so much ever before!

oh and dont get me started on dynamic range!

still waiting for mine. Decided to go Aust stock as the prices were that close.... but have to wait another 2 weeks now as the last shipment for Nikon Aust did not go close to covering orders!

I've been told that thye next shipment in 2 weeks will cover all CURRENT back orders

The first two photos of ash grunwald are at iso 3200. The second two of my silly mates are also at iso 3200 but were taken under very low light (obviously) and have been whitebalenced so they look like daylight

A couple of great images of Ash, who is one of the best young blues performers I have seen in a long, long time.

So I guess you don't like the new toy though, James.

Ash is a great performer, always funny, never boring even though most of the time its just him on the stage.

As for the new toy, its a POS

Cool stuff, looks amazing in low light! Dammit, just when I had pretty much decided on a D300 too!  BTW you totally need a 120-300 to go with it.

OMG so nice at 3200ISO!!!

I'm very impressed by the D700's ability to capture with such low noise at high ISO in low light conditions. I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon, but man I want one!

They are very good, any noise filtering used there?

I'm impressed by everything my D 700 has done so far. Don't forget to try the 14 bit raw capture, and then have a look at the histogram. Those 2 little bits extra seems to add much more dynamic range into the images.

Wow, that really does look very impressive. Nikon have come a long long way since the D70!

Makes my Canon look like a hunk of garbage at ISO3200, but it is about time!

Tell me about it, these look better than my old d70 at like iso 200

Only thing I dont like so far on the D700 is the rubber cover over the USB/DC port seems VERY easy to pop open?

I have been shooting the Buggy Enduro nationals on the weekend (first motorpsort shoot with it) and it came open at least 10 times

I have noticed this,

Hasnt annoyed me that much, but one thing i have found annoying is that the focus points are too centred, its like they have all been crammed into the centre of the view finder so they can be used in crop mode

I am gonna chat Nikon about it as to me it's going to be an issue with the environments I shoot in....

Not acceptable for a $3500+ body in my views.

Maybe I will be going back to the D300 which is sealed nicely..

its had a small amount of WB tinkering, slight brightning of the blacks with fill light, slight brightning of the face using levels. tiny amount of sharpning.

thats basicly it. Will post a few more when i get home!

Tim, the D700 is truly a great camera, but just be warned about the learning curve.

It's just steep, and moreso than I expected. When I grabbed the camera for a night shoot in a very dark bar, I was just very surprised at how many differences there were between the D300 and the D700 from a practical/operational PoV.

I was expecting much more similarity than there was ... and I'd not really taken any time beforehand to familiarise myself with the cam. I just grabbed it and went out and started to (try to) use it.

I'd also not taken any time to set up the wb the way I like it, and for the conditions I was shooting under, that was a(nother) definite mistake on my part.

The issues were all user related, rather than camera related, but my expectations were that it was closer in usage to the D300 than it actually is. While the bodies may be very similar, there are more functional differences than I expected, and thus I was not happy with my outcomes from the evening.

And I have yet to take the time to sit down and really play with the D700 either. Suffice to say that I did enjoy it, and I did enjoy, for instance, using the Siggy 10-20 DX on the FX body. I really need more time to just seriously get to know it ....

Exactly.

I was expecting it to be closer to the d300 than it actually is. On reflection, the differences imposed by FX plus the extra ISO capabilities make me take a step back into reality

The one that has surprised me, though, is the immediate comfort I felt with the D90 last evening. I've mentioned in another thread that this truly seems like the real successor to the D70. Tomorrow we're expecting to spend several hours with 2 x D300s, 1 x D700, 1 x D90, the 45mm PC, the 45mm Pancake, the new 18-105VR and god knows what else we'll take along. Should be fun.

You should fly up for the day and join us.

The problem might be that in the shift to FX you are learning to see again through a different perspective.... it took me forever to get the hang of DX and now with FX I am back in my comfort zone.

I should but I have the option to borrow a film scanner so I am thinking of cranking through some negs that need converting to 16 bit!

Tuesdays are actually quite good for me normally. Do my radio show from 11 till 1, then I have the rest of the day free for ... whatever. Next week the Benz goes in for a service (my mechanic is just near the studio) so I'll be back into an Alfa for a few days.

Give us a yell when you think you can come up.

Haha, I can drool all over this thread as much as I want, but sad to say I have other priorities these days. And even sadder to say, I can already take beautiful photos with my current gear if my limited experience and skills allow me to

But WOW - those high ISO shots are amazing, and from a sub-$4000 body too. Bodes well for the future, the way Canon and Nikon are pushing each other. Competition IS good for everyone.

I'll keep an eye on the FX developments with interest, and get whatever looks good in 12+ months (when my gear lust level hits a certain level! )

Out of interest... I don't think they released a "kit" lens to go with the D700 did they? The most logical current choice would be the 24-120VR, which doesn't exactly get consistently stellar reviews.

D700 is awesome ! the only thing I don't like about it is the CF cover..comes open every easily
