I am keen to get hold of a 50mm. There was one in the for sale section, but I've had no replies, and theres no way to email the person, so its retail I suspect.
As a casual / recreational photographer, am I going to regret getting the F1.8 after a while and wnd up ebaying it to get the F1.4 model ?
And if so, is there any reason to get the new AFS version

the cheapest prices I have found online are
F1.8 $199 camera-warehouse.com.au
F1.4 $479 via this site
F1.4 AFS $629

moneys not a real issue, but it sort of is - make sense of that if you can ! :?:
thx

Scott,

Whether you have a need for the f/1.4 is entirely up to you: the how and what of what you shoot.

Do you have a need - or a desire - to shoot in low light situations? If so, then the first time that you miss having the faster lens you will be kicking yourself. If not, grab the 1.8.

It's that simple.

I have the f/1.8 and because I love low light work I would not mind a f/1.4 although I cant really justify one (money is a problem for me as i am a poor student). So I would say, if you dont mind the money then grab the f/1.4 (AF-S version if you have no issues with losing the aperture ring) and if you dont like it then grab the f/1.8 (i'll happily swap!! )

But then again f/1.8 is pretty good in low light (and much easier to get correct focus on - remember the thinner depth of field that you get if your using the f/1.4 wide open).

Cheers
Cameron

Probably a bit late now, and not that I want to take anything away from Poon, but with the Aussie dollar the way it is, you can do better buying Australian stock. e.g. ECS have it for $435.

Ebay....second hand manual focus 50mm f1.4 lenses for around $150. I use one on my D300 and love it!
