D300 / VR18-200 Question

I was wondering if someone out there might be able to help me work through an issue which i am encountering with my D300.
The camera is brand new (literally 3 days) and i am using the VR 18-200mm lens.
I started noticing an easily audible clunk everytime I half press the shutter, whilst the lens is autofocusing, aperture opening etc. If I don't shoot, there is a second clunk after a delay of a few seconds. I have tried a number of settings / modes etc but can't stop it happening. Photos are coming out fine (great even) but the sound is ugly and mechanical which scares me (and tells me maybe its not meant to be there).
Has anyone had any experience with this or can help.
Thanks
Michele
