The Nikon Rep was at my Local camera store recently and said they are bring out a D700 type DSLR but with higher MP to compete with the 15mp Canon 50D & 21mp 5Dmark II. It's not the D3x either it a newer Nikon thats on its way. I asked him what it was called and he said with a smile maybe the D700x. I dont know if he was talking shit or not.
Does anyone know anymore than that?

That sounds pretty close to the mark.

I'm expecting some announcements in the next few weeks, actually.

the 50d is not a competitor here mind you, it barely competes with a d300. but yeah, it doesnt take a genius to figure out a d700x and d300x will to hit us relatively soon.

i for one hope its not 21mp. 15 or 16mp would be a good comprimise between hi iso and resolution, full HD video, (with the same shitty AF that the MkII has), and some other little enhancements. a fully articualting lcd would be a deal clincher for me, if it doesnt have that, then not i'm not all that excited about either "upgrade". i need a couple more lens' from nikon to show me some direction, otherwise i;ll be going canon this year.

the MkII is around $3700AUD at the moment, so i'd be thinking its gonna be something around there, give or take a couple of hundred. remember, it may be announced say in april, but i doubt it will be available till june or something like that. or...it may not even be announced AT ALL anytime soon !! lol id be more inclined to think a d400 and d60x will come by mid year and a d700x will be end of the year. but thats just me.

Just looking at what Nikon lenses you have in your sig, what lenses do Canon have that would make you want to lose what you have??? I would have thought that you have some of the best lenses out at the moment.

+1. That's pretty much what I'd need to consider upgrading from a D300.
An accurate historgram would be nice to.

All I'd like over my D700 is the HD video, more MP does not excite me at all.

I can understand a D700x but I don't know what a D300x would be.

The D700 is essentially a FF version of the D300 or a prosumer version of the D3. The D3x is a higher resolution of the D3 where the pixel density is approximately the same as the D300. The D700x would be a prosumer version of the D3x again with approximately the same pixel density as the D300. What would the D300x be?

In terms of capabilities, it's been around for about 18 months. It's called the D300. Similar resolution to the D3x, but in a crop sensor body.

Yep; you've nailed it. A couple of weeks early, perhaps, for nailing things. :)

well, you may have got your wish with the spectacular 10-24mm f3.5-4.5DX.
this was obvioulsy a huge hole in their line up that they had to release.

I think that would be the ONLY thing they'll announce though... :(

I was just having a bit of a look around and found info on this rumoured D700x.
Then I found some more info on it so I thought I would share here... Seems all the speculation from people here are pretty accurate...

http://www.nikond700.com/2009/08/d700x-due-in-october/
Launch date is expected to be on or around the 15th October.

http://nikonrumors.com/2009/07/08/nikon ... art-2.aspx
Nikon D700x – differences from the D700:
effective pixels: 24.5 million … Image Sensor Cleaning, Image Dust Off reference data ….
[S] 6.048 x 4.032
Continuous high-speed mode: 5 fps without batterygripu, 6.5 fps with batterygripem
1 Release mode addition: Self-timer + MUP
2200-pixel RGB sensor
LCD monitor: 920 to-dot, 2.9-inch, Výklopný
Enhanced contrast detect AF
Enhanced phase detect AF: new 2,200-pixel RGB sensor cooperates with 3D Tracking, Auto-Area AF-C is dynamic area,
flashing auxiliary section plus focusing direction “display in the viewfinder with the” user-control “change of direction
Movie – mode: 1920 * 1080 at 24 fps Quicktime MOV, H.264 codec

I've just ordered a D700 and I am still very happy. Will be happier when it's in my hands.
I can imagine the D700x costing quite a bit more than HK D700 pricing anyhow, particularly with the D3X sensor.

At a function less than two weeks ago, Nikon Australia sales reps told us that there will not be any Nikon D700X or D700S variants.

On the internet last week, I saw a report that the Nikon D700 had been withdrawn from some vendors' inventories, and associated speculation that there was to shortly be some new model announcements from Nikon.

Whom does one believe? Salespeople, or the internet?

sony's a850 FF with 24mp sensor for $1999USD should have nikon more than a little anxious.

Chris, why?

We were discussing exactly this yesterday, and figured that with Sony's ergonomics, IQ, high ISO performance, their extensive range of high quality glass and superb Sony quality and product longevity (how long is the warranty? :) ) both Nikon and Canon have at least a US$500 margin before this begins to come into contention.

The high-ISO performance of the A900 isn't as good as the competition, and the range of glass is not as extensive as the competition's, but...

The ergonomics of the A900 are very nice. I'm not going to bring up their other bodies, but the A900 (and A850 by extension) is a good tool. Have you used one?
The image quality is good as long as you don't go too high on the ISO. Certainly not a problem for many/most shooting situations. The glass is high quality too.

Ok so I haven't used it extensively, but I've been impressed in my occasional use of an A900.

It did surprise me, as otherwise I haven't had high hopes for Sony products recently...

Chris, why?

this is a good question gary. i will try and answer it. :)

firstly to address some of your points...
sony's warranty is the same as nikons to the best of my knowledge ? (12 months)
ergonomics...agreed, sony isnt aywhere near nikkor level, (apart from their battery grips which are nothing short of outstanding).
agree that hi iso the sony is well behind, (its also double the pixel density though)
IQ ? well this is debatable i suppose. at base iso's the a900 is actually pretty impressive...lets just say that for the purposes of this discussion that the IQ is certainly not BAD.

glass...
sony itself may not have the range of lens' but then the same argument, to a lesser degree, can be made for nikon vs canon. at the end of the day they have enuf high range glass to make most people feel pretty comfortable. let me list you a kit...

zeiss 24-70/2.8 - superb
sony 70-200/2.8 - very good
zeiss 85/1.4 - excellent
zeiss 135/1.8 - excellent

thats a pretty badass kit right there that's cheaper and ALL stabilised. whack in some old legacy minolta tele lens', (all stabilised), and you;re starting to build quite the kit. so for the enthusiast, there's promise there in glass.

then you have a FF body coming in with 24mp at $1999...i mean...wow. add to that the fact that nikons prices seem to have been spiralling out of control and the flat out stubborn REFUSAL to update ancient top end glass...dont get me wrong here, i wouldn't be jumping ship just yet but i have to tell you mate, i can get how this sort of thing could look pretty damn attractive.

I have to admit that I am with you there Rooz....The Sony A900 (A850) and even the A700 are pretty damn fine for ergonomics. A bit rough on the edges but still reasonable. In terms of glass, having used most of the kit mentioned...well lets just say Zeiss is Zeiss. PS you forgot the Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 (have not used it but I suspect that it should be at least very good)

I wont jump ship though, but I welcome the A850 as it can only drive the market towards cheaper FX cameras in the long run.
