Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD - Opinions?

Postby Ant on Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:50 am

Hi,

Just thinking about upgrading my 18-55 VRII to the above Tamron and I am wondering if there are any opinions or other recommendations in this focal range for a fast lens < $1000. From my current research there appears to be three variants of this lens with three different opinions:
1. The original screw drive version was loved
2. The next variant with the internal motor appears to have focus issues?
3. The VC version, cant find any opinions.

Optically, from the reviews and sample pics I have looked at, this lens appears to be very high quality.

Thanks,
Ant.

I own the A16N (screwdriver) and would never part with it, it is great, quick to focus, sharp, no colour casts...I have no complaints.

The A16N II (built in motor) is optically the same, Glen owns a copy, from my experience with it, I would have no problems buying this version either (esp since the A16N is hard to find these days). The AF I found to be a tad slower than the screwdriver (both mounted on the D300).

The B005N (VC) has been said to be very good, and we already know how good the Tamron VC system is (VERY, VERY GOOD up to 4 stops). I have not really been able to put this lens through its paces, but from my experience with the older version I would not hesitate to consider this one either. It is a bit dearer, but the VC is nice to have. If you can compare before you buy then def have a look at this lens.

I did find this on a quick web search, too bad it is in japanese but there are plenty of pics from the B005N

There appears to be a bit more vignetting and distortion on the wide end, but nothing that would be too offputting for me. I will stick to my A16N but that is because I already own it.

Thanks for that Cameron. This is starting to look like a definite purchase. The next question is where to buy in Melbourne.

Its also a good size, I have tried Camerons A16N (on his D300) on occasions and I have been impressed with the compactness of this lens. Looking at the latest version, it looks pretty compact as well, all things considered.

The B005N is a fair whack bigger...so tempting to borrow one for a play.....

$500 cheaper than the brand name competitor! Still a a great bargain. I was very impressed with David's version (LD I belive). Very little distortion, vignetting and CA even wide open.
