300 2.8 AFS - Second hand thoughts

Have been offered a 300 2.8 AFS lens for around $4,500

The lens itself is in perfect condition - but it has some fungus on one of the internal elements.. doesn't appear to impact on the few sample photos I took however. Has been back to Nikon to look at and they said they won't clean it due it it being on the nano coating area

Any thoughts on whether this would be a good buy .. or just spend the extra to get a clean one?

Thanks
Tom

Fungus can spread, so unless it was a great price, I would not spend the money. At $4500, that is not a great price for a lens that has fungus on an internal element. A new one at D-D Photographics is $6K. With the VR II version recently released there should be some good quality second-hand lenses that come up for sale.

So, be patient and save the pesos :-)

If Nikon wont touch it half of what he is asking would not be a good price....

Tom,

Stay well clear. Save the extra $$ and buy a clean copy.

How does the fungus get in there? Yes stay away as it will only get worse.
